Hello golfers,
How to wedge it this winter!
As we are all finding the course that muchlonger this time of year, it means that we arehitting more and more wedges into the green, rather than chips from around them.
Personally I feel that wedges are the mostimportant clubs in your bag. They give youoptions, and variations on the shots that youcan play. I personally carry 4 wedges. APitching wedge, 50°,54° and a 58° wedge. Thisallows me to not have any gaps in where I canplay my full shots from, up until pitchingdistance.
My yardages are as follows:
Pitching wedge - 125 yards
50° - 115 yards
54° - 105 yards
58° - 95 yards
This means I can play a positive shot from allthese distances. If I had 120 yards, then I justcome down the grip by an inch, which shortensthe club, and still hit my normal shot.
Setup
As the wedge shot is a controlled shot, theweight needs to be very neutral. We want to beexact, so any loading of weight needs to beminimal, otherwise we will create more speed, and potentially lose the perfect strike.
We start with 55% of our weight on our leftside. This will keep the swing shorter and morecompact, as well as creates angle to take theball before the divot. Hold the weight in thisposition, and we will swing down onto the ball, creating the correct and consistent strike. Weare not looking for power, we are looking foraccuracy.
If you looking to improve your wedges, why notcheck out if you have gaps in your bag. Untilthe end of February, we will offer a wedgefitting for just £20.00.Let's see if there if there is a gap, and if wecan fill it for you. Clickhere to book your session.

Mail on Sunday Team
Colchester Golf Club's Mail on Sunday team cameout winners after a hard fought tie againstStoke by Nayland Golf Club last Saturday.
Played on a cold, windy and often wet day onStoke's Gainsborough course and from forwardtees it didn't make it easy for either team andwhile on paper Colchester were fielding thebetter golfers they were up against a club whohad progressed to the seventh round in lastyear's competition.
First out was Bill Eke (5)playing Ian McKay (6) thismatch was a prelude for what was to come withEke squeezing out a win on the 18th green. Inthe second match to finish, Colchester's AndySmith (8) had a 5&4 win over DaveHolland (11). John Redden(7) was up against Mark Chaplinand in a closely fought game lost on the 18thhole and with Alan Sharrocks(2) not being able to hold off TrevorWarren after losing out 4&3 thematch was tied at 2 points each.
It was up to the last pairing out on the course,Gary Driver (6) against IanBenson (13), to avoid going intoplayoff holes. It was not to be as they halvedtheir match to make the tie 2½ each.Colchester's team captain Keith Newnhamhad nominated Sharrocks as his play-off man andhe was up against Trevor Warren, a repeat of thepairing in the earlier in the day.
Warren put his drive on the first play-off holeinto the right rough whilst Sharrocks found thefairway and with Warren's approach shot fallingshort of the green and Sharrocks landing safelyon, it was up to Warren's chip. He hit a goodchip but some eight feet past the hole.Sharrock's putt from about 20 feet lipped outfor the birdie but he was safely down for four.Warren had a difficult eight footer to half thehole and move onto the next play-off hole, butit just crept by and the tie went to Colchester.Newnham said after the match, "Thiswas as tough as it gets and winter golf doesnot get much stiffer than what the lads gottoday. Going forward both teams should take alot from today."
