Coaching news

This week, I was asked by a member what theshafts were like in his irons. I asked him thefollowing questions:

- What length were they?
- What stiffness were they?
- What they weighed?
- Were they high or low launch shafts?
- Were they tapered or parallel?
- Where was the kick point?
- Were they steel or graphite?

After a very confused look, he simply replied.."I have no idea". To be honest, before I did anytraining about custom clubs and custom fitting,I would have probably replied with the sameanswer.

The importance of having the correct shafts inyour golf clubs are very simple. Each playerproduces a certain amount of Clubhead speeddepending on the club that you are using. If aplayer's shafts are too stiff, the shaft doesn'tkick correctly and the speed will do down. Ifthe shaft is too soft, the kick will come toearly on the downswing and the speed will godown at the optimum point of contact. You willfind up to 25% difference between correct andincorrect shafts for you.

Here are a list of other things that could gowrong with too stiff a shaft:

- Too Low a flight - the ball doesn't reach itspeak height and doesn't carry its furthestpossible distance

- Push or Over fade - The Clubhead won't releasethrough the ball, leaving the club-face open atimpact

- Mishit - The lack of release could cause astrike off the heel of the club

Toosoft a shaft:

- Wild offline shots - The club can release toomuch through the impact zone, causing a duckhook, or a high slice

- Too High - Shots will fly too high, with theball stalling in the air. This is especiallypoor into the wind

- Mishits - The ball will impact more towardsthe toe of the club with the over release of theclubface.

If you want to find out if your shaft is correctfor you, please book a club fitting here.

Competition news

With the Men's winter League coming to thecrunch point of the knockout first stage, therehas been some very close, high quality matchestaking place. Last year's winners Ben and JoeWilliams are through to the Quarter Finals aftera thrilling 2 Up victory over the strong pair ofBill Eke and Stuart Reed. The Williams twinsrequired 6 gross birdies to fend off theiropponents in a close match.

In the other matches, Kevin Brett and HowardFoster, defeated the in-form pair of JimWilkinson and Ian Devenish. Phil Hayward andKevin Petch defeated Gary Driver and SteveSharman, whilst the hotly fancied pairing of TimMoriarty and Lewis Chambers, came up against theconsistent Mike Withers and John Dornan. Withsome really solid play the Withers/Dornanpairing prevailed.

In the last of the matches played so far, MikeAkin and Richard Watts were defeated by the lowpairing of Dave Chambers and Matt Black. After alast hole victory the Chambers/Black combinationwere delighted to get through, with Mattcomplimenting his opponents play. This leavessome great potential ties in the next round!
