Coaching news

Do you always use loft?

When the course is soft and the wind is up, highlob shots become extremely hard to judge. As achild I grew up at the end of Nick Faldo'sgolfing career and reading his books. He was aworker, someone who practiced non-stop alwayshoping to achieve perfection. I think the onething Faldo did have, that we can all use toimprove, is the variation of short game shots athis disposal.

I watch golfers walk their trolleys round theback of the green, grab one club and walk overto their ball to chip. This is before a lie isanalysed, a type of shot has been decided on,and what the landing area is going to be.

If there is a bunker in the way, or a big ridgeto carry the ball over, we do indeed needmaximum loft to stop the ball quickly, and getit close to a flag. But when there are noobstacles in the way, it means we have so manyoptions of what shot to play. This time of yearI really do recommend a 9 iron chip and runshot. It has enough loft to have control overthe ball, still being able to let the ball runfor the duration of the shot, very much like aputt.

Work out how long the ball should be in the airfor, and therefore how much the ball should run. Here is a % breakdown of how different shotshave different types of flights

Lob Wedge - 85% through the air - 15% on theground
Gap Wedge - 75% through the air - 25% on theground
Pitching Wedge - 65% through the air - 35% onthe ground
9 Iron - 35% through the air - 65% on theground
8 Iron - 25% through the air - 75% on the ground

When you practice, work on being able to achievethese flights. This will leave you so many moreoptions, to help your scoring.

Competition news

Keith Newnham had a very eventful weekend atColchester Golf Club. His Daily Mail side wereunfortunately beaten by a strong Birch Groveside on Saturday morning. Leading the team out,Bill Eke was level par through 14 holes, and wasdefeated by a player who was 5 under par grossoff his 7 handicap!

In the second match, Matt Black played below hishandicap, but was narrowly beaten 2&1 by hisopponent. Andy Smith was third out forColchester, and with some really solid golfproduced a 4&3 victory to get the game backto 2-1. Mick Potter was the 4th man out, and heplayed really well in his victory to square thegame up at 2-2.

In the final match Colchester were representedby +1 handicapper Ben David. Giving away 8 shotsagainst his opponent, he couldn't quite fend himoff, and unfortunately this led to a 3-2defeat.

Keith's weekend did get much better on Sundaythough. In some really tough conditions, withthe tee's right at the back, and the courseplaying extremely long, Keith produced a greatscore of 37 points to snatch victory in thefantastically supported CHAPS Stableford. With82 players competing, Keith managed to get thevictory over Mike Morley and Julian Munson oncountback. Nigel Balls and Mark Hills were ashot further back on 36 points.
