Sam Latta won the Lombard TrophyQualifier this weekend!
Returning a nett 67
Latta fromhis nine handicap he won out after a three-waycountback involving
Brendan Booth(5) and
Keith Clark (10).
Latta'svictory was a continuation of the great form hehas shown since the start of the competitiveseason.
Winning the Elmstead Qualifier on Good Friday heonly lost out to
Roger Wright, the eventual winner, at the second play-offhole in the knock out stages of that competition. In fourth place was
Ralph Charles(17) who again won out on countback from fifthplace
Andy Smith (6).
Sam will now play withProfessional
Chris Cutchie, at alocal qualifier, and victory there would mean atrip to Portugal to the Grand Finals!
Cathy Burchell playing off 10handicap secured first place in the Ladies FlagCompetition. Her round (74 nett) finished on the18th green and was just the one shot better thansecond placed
Marilyn Wood (17)who finished her round along with
BellaAngel on the 18th fairway.
There were four players all returning 79 nett andthey were lead in by
Bella Angel(7), Fourth place was
Sharon Manby(33) with
Cherie Clark (21)getting the better of
Sheena Nunny(17) who took sixth spot.
Saturday also saw the final of themen's Winter League. Starting last October, thetwo remaining pairs had fought their way out ofthe leagues, followed by the knockouts to this, the final match.
The
Williams twins
Benand Joe, both playing off five, were upagainst
Matt Black (8) and
DavidChambers (6).The match started with
Chambersleaving his approach to the first hole short, buta chip in for a birdie gave them the hole againstthe two pars of the
Williams twins.
That was really as close as the
Black andChambers pairing got to the victory. The
Williams boys playing solidbut not spectacular golf slowly crept ahead. Thematch finished on the 15th hole with a clear4&3 victory to
Joeand Ben Williams.
Colchester Golf Club started off the men's countyinterclub matches with two good wins. The seniorswere drawn away to Nazeing Golf Club and theNorman Plum team played Harwich and Dovercourt.
AtNazeing, Colchester were giving away a total of 45shots in handicap but achieved an excellent 6½ to4½ victory. With the exception of
JohnRedden, a 5&4 win over
MickO'Brien and
John Dornana 4&3 win against
Eddie Burton, most matches went to the18th.
And victory in the Norman Plum, puts
DavidHumberstone's team through to the nextround.
Putt Like the Pro's
Distance Putting
A great drill that I often use to help my distanceand pace judgement, is to hit some putts from longrange looking at the hole throughout the stroke.By concentrating on the target and not the ball, you should start to develop a more naturaland instinctive feel for how hard to swing. Usethis before going out to play and your pacecontrol, which is crucial, will be spot on.
Short Putting The biggest failings we have on short putts is thefact that we look for the ball to go in. There istoo much body movement when this happens. A greatdrill is to practice putting on your left leg (forright handed golfers). Keeping your weightextremely balanced, will show you the importanceof being still when you putt. When the head moves, the shoulders can become open to your target, evenwith a 5% open shoulder line, this can cause aball to move 1inch offline, consequently causing alip out and a missed putt!
