Why get custom fit?
The top 3 from this week's competition haverecently all had their clubs customfitted for themselves.
When a golfer is custom fitted for their irons, there is a lengthy process to get you to theirperfect clubs.
- Firstly the length of the iron- If a player has irons too short for them, thiswill cause the players posture to be poor, anover-arched back angle can dramatically reducethe rotation in the golf swing, consequentlyleading to less power and distance.
- The lie -The lie angle is then tested on the lie boardusing impact tape. This indicates whereaboutsthe player is striking the turf at impact. Ifthe heel contacts the ground first, this cancause the club face to become closed, and if thetoe strikes the ground first, it can cause theclubface to open. A correct lie will produceperfectly equal divots, rather than lopsidedones!
- The shaft- The shaft is the main thing to be fitted in agolfers custom fit. A shaft can vary the resultin so many different ways. If the shaft is toosoft (i.e regular rather than stiff) if cancause more side spin and more backspin. This isa negative. Into the wind the shots can balloonup in the air. More side spin can cause wildshots to become even wilder! If the shaft is toostiff for you, you can lose lots of club headspeed. The shaft bends on the downswing toproduce power, but if there is no flex, the clubdoes gain the extra speed. This can make itharder to square up the face, consequentlyresulting in a Block or Slice.
-The Head - Mostplayers will have an ideal look of a club. Manyplayers prefer an oversized head forforgiveness, others like a smaller blade to feellike they have more control. The head comes downto preference of the feel, distance and accuracyof an iron head. A low spin, high launchoversize club will definitely help withconsistency of strike, and well as a much higherball-flight.
- The Grip -The grip is extremely important . Firstly youhave to decide on the feel you like. There arestandard rubber grips, or some that are corded.Corded sometimes have the feel of being easierto grip, but they do wear out those leathergloves! Then there is the thickness. If a gripis too skinny, it can sometimes feel as if thehands to become quite active, causing moreshape. If it is too thick, then it can be hardto release the face, causing a blocked shot.
Once this is complete, you're custom fitted andready for action!
