Wedge it closer this Spring! Knowing how far you hit the ball is
everythingin golf. There is no point hitting well struckcentered shots if the ball comes up 15 yards shortor 15 yards long of your intended target.
When you watch the top players in the worldplaying their best golf, the ball always goes pinhigh, or where they want to leave themselves fortheir easiest next putt. The reason why they cando this is because they are gapped properly withtheir golf clubs.
Most top players carry a minimum or 3 wedges. 1 xPW 1 x GW and 1 x SW. This gives them a minimum of6 shot yardages. A full swing, and a ¾ swing.
Personally I carry 4 wedges. A 46* 50* 54* and58*. This gives me a minimum of 8 shot distances Ican use.
- Full 46* - 130 Yards - ¾ 46* - 120 Yards
- Full 50* - 115 Yards - ¾ 50* - 107 Yards
- Full 54* - 105 Yards - ¾ 54* - 97 Yards
- Full 58* - 94 Yards - ¾ 58* - 80 Yards
This covers a large area of distances, and it willreally help to increase your distance control andbring down your scores.
A win by Colchester Golf Club's Thornton Cup teamsends them on their way in this the county'spremier team Matchplay competition. Colchester wonby the tightest of margins, eight matches toseven.
Theweather was perfect, the course tight, quirky andwith a layout totally different to Colchester. Itwas always going to be a tight match.
After the morning's foursomes the scores werelevel at 2½ matches each, and the afternoonmatches whilst throwing up some good wins for bothsides never produced a clear leader.
AlanSharrocks as the lead off man halvedhis match but it was
Cai Jameswho gave Colchester an early lead with a 5&4win, followed by
Dan Eke who hadanother 5&4 victory.
These victories were soon negated as Bursteadfought back with wins over
RichardWithnall and Steve
Wynne.Jason Nicolls had a good 2&1winalong with
Lewis Barber but with
James Angel and Roger
Wrightlosing out the scores on paper at least werelevel.
Thedeciding match was fittingly the last out on thecourse, and Colchester's victory was sealed when
BrendanBooth using his years of experience incounty competitions to the full secured his match5&4 to win the tie.
The team looked great in their new Puma ThorntonCup Kit. We would like to personally thank member
Paul Hardy and the CX GROUP forthe very generous sponsorship.
Meanwhile at the Club it was
AndrewLeonard-Jones(14) and
GrahamParker(19) returning a plus nine scorewho caught the headlines with a win in the CurtisCup, a trophy first presented in 1933.
Their score was two holes better than the secondplaced pairing of
Mike Sutton(9)and
David Latta(15) who returnedplus seven.
A countback was needed to sort out third spot with
AlanIrvine(11) and
Guy Lennox(8)getting the nod from
Ben and
JoeWilliams(5s). Both pairings returningplus six with
Irvine and
Lennoxbeing plus five on the back nine against the
Williams'plus two.
Twenty-four pairs of ladies competed for theMackenzie Foursomes qualifier, the top eightpairings going into a knockout.
With
Gill Crayston and
JudithRobertson creeping ahead of
CatherineChick and
Cherie Clark,to top this qualifier, both returning nett 78s. Inthird place were
