What a fantastic day had by all at our Colchester Academy Range Launch. It was wonderful to see so many members support the event, taking part in all of the events that ran throughout the day. We ran some closest to the flag competitions, longest drives and had all our various branded fitting equipment to try out.
With beautiful warm summer weather, the range looked fantastic. I would like to personally thank Dave Blackmore, Helen Tartellin, Vic Pomphrett, John Dornan, Hannah Butcher, Julie Ruscoe and Mike Withers for all of their help with the event, as well as many others making it such an enjoyable afternoon.

Higher Launch equals more distanceThe modern day driver has specifically been designed to produced less spin then previous designs.
The manufacturers have done this, because less side spin, will create less shape. This in turn will cause the ball to not go so far offline.
The disadvantage of a low spin driver is the peak height that it can achieve. Spin is also required to hit higher shots, so low spin drivers with not enough loft will not reach its desired peak height.
As you can see in the two examples, one shot has a lower launch angle, with a lower carry and total yardage, whilst the other has a much higher launch, giving it more carry, and more total distance.
With the higher launch angle the ball carried an
extra 17 yards with a total distance
313 yards, compared to
285 yards with the lower launch angle.
Even only one degree of angle can significantly lengthen your tee shots.
Make sure you have enough loft on your driver to maximise your distance.
Shelley Persent will have been pleased with the good golfing conditions which saw her shoot the winning score in the Ladies MacMillan Spoon Medal at Colchester Golf Club. From an eighteen handicap, her 75 nett was enough to secure this week's competition in the ladies section.
Deviating just six times from her handicap's regulation bogey a hole, and two of those were pars, she put herself one shot ahead of second placed
Gillian Crayston (26) who shared her score of 76 with
Margaret Carter (24). In fourth place was
Madryn Abnett (16) who returned a nett 77.
Philip French came out tops in the mens' monthly medal, scoring a nett 68. A birdie three on the third hole set up a good front nine of just three over par gross and although he fell away a touch on the back his score was more than enough to win the competition by three shots.
Michael Mays (13) gained the better of
Adam Lock (7) after a countback for second spot both returning nett 71s.
Andrew Sparrow (11) was fourth with a nett 72.
The Thornton Cup team are now out of this the county's premier inter-club competition after suffering a nine matches to six loss away to Maylands. What happened to the team in the morning foursomes is difficult to fathom but after being in a reasonable position half way through the round they let it slip to end 4½ to ½ down.
Maylands now needed just 3½ points from the ten afternoon singles matches to secure the tie but to the team's credit Maylands didn't find it as easy as they would have expected. With wins early on from
Jason Nicholls and
Lewis Barber the pressure was put back on Maylands and with
Richard Withnall, Brendan Booth and
Jonathan Gilbert all chipping in victories. Colchester won the afternoon singles 5½ to 4½ but the aggregate score went against them.
At the Club, the mixed Bank Holiday competition was the Jean Ingleton Salvers. Played in a foursomes format,
Nesta and
Rob James returned 36 points to take these much coveted Salvers.
They were some three points ahead of two pairs both returning 33 points. Adjudged second after a countback were
Peter and
Sharon Manby and in third were
Marilyn and
Ernie Free. With 31 points were
Sara and
Trevor Cock and in fifth place were
Annie Johnston and
Tom Rothery.
