Product review

Srixon Ultisoft

The UltiSoft is designed specifically for golfers with low to mid swing speeds who are looking for the ultimate in feel without sacrificing distance.

The super-low compression of Srixon's softest ever E.G.G core delivers an incredibly soft feel whilst maintaining maximum initial ball speed to generate longer, straighter distance.

Competition news

On Friday, 49 teams of four played in Colchester's annual Pro-Am in aid of the St Helena Hospice. The Club were grateful to Poundfield Products for again sponsoring this day which was enjoyed so much by members and their guests.

Each team consisted of a professional golfer and three others with two scores counting, which invariably produces good enjoyable golf and this year the competition was won with an incredible score of 22 shots under par by the team of Paul Smith, Kevin Brett, Kevin Prince and their professional Stuart Robertson (Ufford Park).

The highlight of their round was undoubtedly the 13th hole where with shots, two of them got two and came off with a four shot advantage.

They were two shots clear of second placed team of Peter Manby, Stephen Moore and Mike Potter with professional Connor Morris (Rochford Hundred) who returned 20 under. Third place was lead in by our major sponsor Mark Jardine and Trevor and Stuart Cock with the Sprowston manor professional Chas Davis.

Nearest the pins by the amateurs on the 4th was Lorrie Austin, on the 8th Dan Nichols, 13th Tim Rogers and the 16th Mike Ellis. The pro' nearest the pin was Andy Cotton (Stoneham Barns) with a measurement of 1.83cm.

Nearest the pin in two on the tenth hole was Ian Parry who sank his second shot. Chris Cutchie won it on the 12th and Andrew George on the 14th. Ollie Whiting got the longest drive on the 15th.

Noel Quinn (Whipsnade Park) and Jack Frances (Old Ford Manor) both finished on the top of the leaderboard at Colchester Golf Club's 29th annual Pro-Am in aid of the St Helena Hospice.

The pair shot three under par 67's on a day that encouraged good golf. The course was at its best with greens as true as they get and full credit goes to the green-keeping staff for their expertise in getting the course in such an excellent condition.

Frances had show little recent form until this week when he tied for second place in the Berkhamsted Pro-Am, a competition where his co-leader Quinn had also done well, finishing in fifth place. At Colchester however they were able to take away just over a £1,000 each from the £6,350 prize fund.

Hard on the heels of the leaders and taking joint third place were a group of three on a score of 68. Andrew Robinson (Southwold) who, in his round, had three birdies against a single bogey, Kieran James (North Circular Golf) had a steady round with two birdies and Glynn Harris (Mill Hill) had four birdies but two bogeys.

Colchester's joint professional Mark Baker returned a credible par equalling 70 whilst his joint professional colleague Chris Cutchie after completing what would have been an excellent round of 67, fell afoul of the strict rules of golf by signing for the wrong score and was disqualified.

Meanwhile Colchester's Jubilee Cup team are through to the semi-final. Playing Stapleford Abbots at Bentley. The singles matches were close with Colchester winning 3½ to 2½ and it was all down to the pairs.

It was going to be tough as Stapleford had only lost one doubles match in the previous rounds and all three matches went down the 18th with Colchester winning them all one up.

Cassie Cunningham was the clear leader in Ladies Club Championship. Her gross rounds of 76 and 80 put her nine shots clear of the chasing pack lead by Mandy Rix

After Cunningham's morning round which included two birdies all looked to be sewn up but in the afternoon, Rix put some pressure on her and by the halfway stage was starting to close the six shot gap but to no avail as Cunningham then steadied her game and maintained her cushion to win for the second year.

Coaching news

Low spinning chip shots

This week I wanted to give you guys a quick tip when playing lower shots that stop on the green. The shot is played very similar to the chip and run shot, but with a much higher lofted club. The body weight on the left side at setup is a must.

Next time your practicing, grab a lob wedge or a sand wedge and place the ball towards the back of your stance. This will allow your hands to be in front of the ball. Because the hands are forward, we must square the face up to the target, this then reduces the loft on the club, consequently hitting lower shots. Because the high lofted wedge has more loft, it creates more spin, and then produces a shot which fires lower, and spins more.

Try it next time to play this new shot!
