Coaching news

With the Cobra Demo Day approaching below are so of the key fundamentals that will be involved;

Why get custom fit?

When a golfer is custom fitted for their irons, there is a lengthy process to get you to their perfect clubs.

Firstly the length of the iron - If a player has irons too short for them, this will cause the players posture to be poor, an over-arched back angle can dramatically reduce the rotation in the golf swing, consequently leading to less power and distance.

The lie - The lie angle is then tested on the lie board using impact tape. This indicates whereabouts the player is striking the turf at impact. If the heel contacts the ground first, this can cause the club face to become closed, and if the toe strikes the ground first, it can cause the clubface to open. A correct lie will produce perfectly equal divots, rather than lopsided ones!

The shaft - The shaft is the main thing to be fitted in a golfers custom fit. A shaft can vary the result in so many different ways. If the shaft is too soft (i.e. regular rather than stiff) if can cause more side spin and more backspin. This is a negative. Into the wind the shots can balloon up in the air. More side spin can cause wild shots to become even wilder! If the shaft is too stiff for you, you can lose lots of club head speed. The shaft bends on the downswing to produce power, but if there is no flex, the club does gain the extra speed. This can make it harder to square up the face, consequently resulting in a Block or Slice.

The Head - Most players will have an ideal look of a club. Many players prefer an oversized head for forgiveness, others like a smaller blade to feel like they have more control. The head comes down to preference of the feel, distance and accuracy of an iron head. A low spin, high launch oversize club will definitely help with consistency of strike, and well as a much higher ball-flight.

The Grip - The grip is extremely important . Firstly you have to decide on the feel you like. There are standard rubber grips, or some that are corded. Corded sometimes have the feel of being easier to grip, but they do wear out those leather gloves!

Then there is the thickness. If a grip is too skinny, it can sometimes feel as if the hands to become quite active, causing more shape. If it is too thick, then it can be hard to release the face, causing a blocked shot.
