Coaching news

Golf is an elegant game of timing, rhythm and tempo, not brute force. A beginning golfer learns exactly where to position the feet, knees, arms and hands. He also learns how to execute a takeaway, backswing, downswing and follow-through. It's no wonder that the rhythm and tempo of the swing can suffer as the golfer tries to pay attention to all this information at once. To swing smoothly with good rhythm and tempo, put all the particulars in the back of your mind when you practice. Get out on the driving range, relax and hit some balls with a smooth swing.

Step 1: Follow a pre-shot routine to quiet your mind and focus on the golf shot. Use this time to survey the shot, check your stance and posture, and position the ball properly.

Step 2: Grip the club with just enough pressure to hold the club, making sure that the club is grasped across your fingers and not in the palm of your hand.

Step 3: Align the clubface to the target line, bend your knees and lean into the ball. Allow your arms to hang down from your shoulders without tension. Your knees should be over your feet, and your shoulders should be over your knees.

Step 4: Bring the club back slowly with a shoulder turn. Imagine holding a bucket of water instead of the club, and allowing the water to pour out slowly without a splash as you take it back. Your left shoulder will approach your chin on the backswing, and your weight will shift to your back foot. Concentrate on having your legs, arms and torso working together for a smooth swing.

Step 5: Start the downswing with the lower part of your body before your arms and the club reach the top of the swing. The downswing tempo is faster than the backswing to generate the speed that results in distance. The downswing remains smooth and rhythmic, with the arms relaxed to take advantage of centrifugal force as the clubhead hits through the ball. Maintain your balance and posture as you execute a strong follow-through. Your weight will shift the front foot.

Competition news

Colin Williams with a superb Stableford round of 41 points took the John V. Wright trophy at Colchester Golf Club last weekend.

Played for exclusively by members of the Club's thriving 100 Club Williams, from his nineteen handicap, was too good for the chasing pack lead by thirteen handicapper Dennis Brown who's 40 points secured him second place on his own. Unusually there were no countbacks needed to separate any of the top four places and Roy Darby (14) took third place with 39 points.

After speaking to the Jubilee Cup Captain Jeff Johnson. He wanted to say how well his team did this year on reaching the Semi - Final played at The Rayleigh Club last weekend.

It was a fantastic achievement for the team, but unfortunately went down to Crondon Park in a tough encounter! So well done Jeff and his squad!

The 100 Club has been run over the past six year by Dick Jackson who this year hands over the job to Mike Jones. During Jackson's tenure the 100 Club has contributed many thousand of pounds to the Club's amenities the most obvious one being the continuation and upgrading of the laid path and it's surrounds by the first tee area.

Securing fourth place on 38 points was the first lady past the post, Joan Cotterill (26). Taking second place in the ladies was Janet Tebbutt who returned 35 points from her 25 handicap, the third lady home was Gill Minns (17) with 34 points.

The highlight of the round was the halfway hut, when all were able to enjoy Jo Mager's excellent cakes.

Penny Allen took the plaudits in the ladies Windfall trophy. Her 41 points from a 36 handicap was unbeatable on the day. Twenty-four handicapper Wendy Smith's 39 points secured her second spot and there were four golfers all returning 38. Val Doubleday (28), Annie Johnston (15), Roberta Bodsworth (29) and finally Cherie Clark (21).

Allen goes forward to represent the Club in October at Brentwood Golf Club.

In Saturdays Walk-on Stableford James Angel excelled with a very impressive 40 points from his three handicap. Lewis Barber (5) was some four points adrift with 36 points and Trevor Hooton (11) and Patrick Logan (16) both carded 35s.

Colchester's Vets continue their programme with an excellent win over a strong Ipswich team. Their 4½ v 3½ victory gave them an overall record of twelve wins and nine losses with two matches tied.
