Competition news

Finals Day at Colchester Golf Club produced three tight matches with some excellent golf.

John Waterson was the winner of the Braiswick Cup beating Steve Bozier one up on the last. In a competition first played for 90 years ago this year some 130 plus members of all sections of the Club started the knockout matches in April.

Waterson
giving four shots to Bozier's twelve handicap quickly went two up but Bozier pegged him back by the halfway stage and was two up by the 15th. Waterson's impressive finish of birdie, birdie, par was more than enough to claim the trophy.

In the Braiswick Plate Brendan Booth(5) claimed the honours over Mark Culley(12). Holes were regularly exchanged on the first nine with Culley's highlight being a 40ft putt on the second, which hung over the hole for what seemed an eternity before dropping. Booth however was one up at the turn.

Another period of hole trading followed with Booth two up going down the 17th. Culley using his shot well saw Booth lip out with the lead now reduced to one. After two good drives both got their pars on the 18th giving Booth the match one-up.

In the Victory Cup final Stuart MacAulay(5) took on Adam Lock(7). MacAulay's eventual victory was hard won, although he held onto a slender lead throughout. A front nine saw MacAulay demonstrated some class recovery shots contrasting with Locks game that was solid throughout. Both players demonstrated their putting proficiency early on. A birdie down the 11th and a win on the 12th then MacAulay in a commanding position.

After a couple of wins by Lock real pressure was on, but errant tee shots on the 16th resulted in a half which was followed by another half on the 17th giving MacAulay the Cup by two and one.

Catherine Chick(22) had a good win in the Ladies Bogie Final Cup. Her countback victory over Patricia Walker(26) was built on steady golf from an ever improving golfer. Linda Freeman(20) and Gill Crayston(25) returned scores of 34 points to secure third and fourth places.

In the support stableford Philippa Deman(9) took the plaudits with 37 points followed in by Hannah Butcher(23) and Gill Minns(17) both on handicap equalling 36 points.

There was a Vets Stableford where Mel Barker(17) returned 40 points to win the day from Gerry Woodruff on 39. Greg Pye(11) put in a steady round in returning 38 points followed by Tim Roger(9) and Peter Manby(13) on 37 points.

In their final home match of the year the Vets had a comfortable win 7&1 over Burnham on Crouch Vets. After a poor showing at Burnham in the away fixture, the opponents turned up with 8-0 badges to taunt our Vets team!

As you can see we were happy to take them back off them!

Junior news

This weekend saw the Mini Junior Championship, played on the main course.

The under 12 golfers played the front 10 holes off the Red Tee's, with the under 9's playing the first 4 holes off forward tee's. The day was an absolute success, supported by the parents, John and Sheila Dornan doing the BBQ, and Vic Pomphrett and Stewart Ness helping with the day.

The tournament itself was full of fantastic individual performances. Nico Barnes and Theo Baker (both aged 12) were tied after 10 holes with a fantastic score of +10 gross.

This lead to a single hole playoff, where defending champion Barnes made a fantastic up and down 3 for victory.

In the girls section it was just a tight. Sian Roberts and Holly Collins were a single shot apart playing the last hole.

With a one shot lead, Sian couldn't quite close it out, and Holly was able to sneak past and grab victory by a single shot to become the Girls Champion.

In the under 9 division, Noah aged 6 was just denied by George Clark, who managed to secure victory with just 25 shots over the 4 holes.

It was a fabulous end to a great year of junior coaching at the Colchester Junior Golf Academy.

Video of the week

It's not long now until the chest thumping and fist pumping starts, and in the build up to this year's Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, a few of the players have been busy slapping on a bit of face paint. Time to book your place in front of the TV, or down the club, and watch all the action on Sky Sports.
