Club news

It was Colchester Golf Club's 107th AGM last week and Steward Ness was voted in as the Captain for the year along with his Vice-Captain, Mike Withers

With Jane Madge being voted in and confirmed as the Ladies' Captain they along with Vic Pomphrett, last year's Captain make up the Officers of the Club for next year.

Introduced to the assembled members were the Vets' Captain, Paul Lock and the Junior Captain, Louisa Storey

There were four vacancies on the Management Board, these were filled by Dave Blackmore and Helen Tartellin who were re-elected and Guy Lennox and Ian Parry both new to the role.

Earlier in the week Don McBurney had won the Jack Halls Trophy, the Vets' section pre AGM competition, with an excellent score of 41 points. The seemingly ever present McBurney, now playing off 21, was well clear of the rest of the field with 11 handicapper Alec Alden taking second place with 39 points.

Kevin Brett (7) secured third spot on 38 points with four players recording 37. They were Jim Wilkinson (9), Ken Taylor (15), David Watts (14) and Trevor Cock (15).

After the Vets' AGM the match play prizes were presented with Michael Deeks winning the singles knockout from Tom Day who was able to console himself by winning the best Four from Eight with 144 points in the running Vets Stableford competitions.

Simon Rippingale was presented with the Anniversary Trophy and David Watts took the honours in the John Champ Christmas Stableford.

The ladies have nominated Janet Austin (24) and Fiona Prentice (20) to represent the Club in the Daily Mail Foursomes. Winning the qualifying event last Tuesday by just the one point after returning 34 points. Second place was taken by Lottie Whyman (1) and Cassie Cunningham (4) their handicaps proving to be a negative against the steadiness of the winning pair.

Also returning 33 points were Maureen Devenish (17) and Lynda Freeman (20) along with Claire Croger (24) and Wendy Smith (23) who lost out after the countback.

In a Junior Stableford Harry Hill the outgoing Junior Captain romped home with 40 points from his five handicap. He was two points clear of Jacob Daniels (15) who had a 38. Brothers Joe and Sam Jackson (10 and 16 handicap) came home next with 36 and 35 points to complete the top four.

Coaching news

The setup has a direct impact on the swing plane, angle of attack, club path and impact zone. A bad setup will almost certainly create many bad shots. By skipping this important step in the beginning, you will begin to make unnecessary and often faulty adjustments to your swing in the quest to hit the ball farther, more consistently and toward your target.

With a 7 iron in hand, begin by standing upright with your feet together and a golf ball placed approximately 18-20 inches directly in front of you. Hold the club up in front of you, chest high, with the head pointed skyward. Make sure you have taken a proper grip (interlock, overlap, 10 finger) on the club. Remove your right hand from the grip and place it by your right side.

Lower your left hand and the club to your left side. With your left hand, place the club head behind the ball as you bend slightly from the waist, keeping your head and back in alignment. The butt end of grip should be a good hand's width from your thigh and should be pointed toward your left pocket area. The club should form a straight line with your left arm up to the shoulder.

Keep the club in place and your body still as you adjust your feet to shoulder-width apart, keeping both feet the same distance from the ball. Flex, don't bend, your knees slightly and adjust your balance toward the balls of your feet in a good, athletic ready position. Flare your left foot out 20-30 degrees (2 inches to left). The heel should stay in place. Again, the butt end of grip should still be pointed toward left pocket area.

Bring your right hand from your side and place it on the grip properly in its position below the left hand. This move should tilt your upper body to the right, which will create the correct spine angle for the golf swing. This tilt will also promote a shift of most of your weight to the inside of your right foot and knee.

With your weight already preloaded to the back, there is no need to shift on your takeaway because your weight is already there. This addition to your setup will help eliminate any swaying of the body on the takeaway.

These simple steps to creating a repeatable setup routine will seem complicated at first, but with practice will help you develop more consistency and will be very useful in the development of better pre-shot routine in the future.
