George Shelmerdine scored 39 points to win the John Champ Christmas Stableford at Colchester Golf Club.
Starting out on a frozen course on a bitterly cold morning the competition was quickly declared a non-qualifier for handicap, but this did not deter Shelmerdine. Starting on the eleventh tee he was quickly into his stride and by the time he completed his first nine with eighteen points he was ready to accelerate.
The John Champ Christmas Stableford is now in its third year and sets the seal on the Vets Christmas golfing celebrations.
On Shelmerdine's back nine he had just four bogeys and from his fourteen handicap the pars began to build his score nicely so that by the time he completed the nine he had 21 points to add to his earlier 18.
His total score of 39 was two clear of second placed
Clive Kerr (24) who returned 37 and with third place being secured by
Michael Berry (19) with 36 points the major placings were sealed.
After a countback, fourth spot was taken by seven handicapper
Alan Hyde with fifth and sixth placing being filled by
John Williams (16) and
Bernard Hart (16) all three returning 35 points.
Nearest the pins were secured by last year's Club Captain
Vic Pomphrett on the eighth and on the sixteenth by
Alan Hyde.
The competition and the lunch afterwards was superbly organized by
John Champ who continues his role as Vets Secretary in his omnipotent manner.
