Competition news

Round Up

The final of the Gents Winter League Competition took place on Sunday, 26 March. This was the culmination of the annual tournament that commenced in October. This year was no different to previous years with a number of closely fought matches taking place between evenly matched pairs. In the final Robert Svensson and Ralph Charles were paired against Ian Parry and Russell Storey. The game was played in the correct spirit despite both pairs being highly competitive. Parry and Storey took the early initiative and by the 12th hole they were four holes up. Then their opponents slowly wrestled back the momentum and the match was back to all square on the 17th. The 17th and 18th were halved as the match went into extra holes. The first extra hole was halved in pars and the match was decided when Charles secured a net birdie on the second extra hole.

On Tuesday, 21 March the Ladies Section held a popular Hi - Low Competition with 26 pairs entering and it was a very closely fought contest. The winners had to be decided on count-back with Madryn Abnett and Gillian Whittle declared as winners with admirable 37 points. Second place was awarded to Philippa Deman and Carole Watts. Annie Johnston and Penny Fairs came third with a respectable 35 points.

The Junior section held a successful Mad March Stableford Competition on Saturday, 25 March. Theo Baker (21) came out on top with 36 points, his well-crafted round contained two halves of 18 points each. He held off a strong challenge from Charlie Allison (23) with 35 points and Max Maynard with a score of 34.

On Sunday, 26 March Robin Tucker (21) won the Gents Walk on Stableford Competition with a creditable 35 points. With a strong wind blowing he kept his score on course with a very solid round that contained four pars whilst he scored points on every hole. Robin won on countback from Andrew Patrick (8). Craig Bulow (12) came third with 33 points.

Monday, 27 March saw the Vets play against Gosfield Lake away. A difficult match with Gosfield taking the victory 6-2.

How Do You Grip A Golf Club?

You'll grip a club anywhere between 70 and 100 times per round, and there's no reason why you shouldn't get it right every time.

Having the correct golf grip will enable you to deliver the club square to the intended target at impact.

Grip the club in the palm and fingers of your hands. For the ideal neutral grip, your left thumb should be positioned just to the right of centre.

From there, attach your right hand by gripping with the middle two fingers and forefinger. Your right thumb should sit just to the left of centre.

If your grip is truly neutral you should be able to see two knuckles on each hand at address. If you can't, your grip will either be too strong or too weak, causing you to make contact with the ball with either a closed or open clubface. When asking how do you grip a golf club, use these checkpoints to make sure you are doing it correctly.

Positioning

One common error I often see among amateur golfers is holding the club too far up the grip. This results in a loss of control and also causes shots to come out of the heel of the club. You should look to leave an inch between the top of your grip and the end of the club. On many grips, there's a mark where your bottom thumb should go. This is a good marker for where your grip should be. By gripping slightly further down the shaft you will improve your consistency.

Pressure

If you can feel tension in your forearms at address, then you're gripping the club too tightly. This will prevent you from completing a full shoulder turn. It's something that happens to all standards of golfer, particularly when playing under pressure. Focus on soft hands and not gripping the club too tight. Don't forget to waggle the club at address, as this action helps to alleviate tension.

Size

When asking how do you grip a golf club it is worth point out that having the wrong size grip immediately puts you on the back foot. An easy way of checking your grip size is to grip the club with just your glove hand.

Take a look at where the ends of your fingers are relative to your palm. They should be lightly touching each other.

If your fingers are digging into your palm, your grips are too thin. If they aren't touching at all, your grips are too thick. The incorrect grip size will hold you back when trying to deliver the club squarely at impact. This could be all you need to help fix your slice.
