It was a weekend of mixed success with Colchester Golf Club's teams.
The Curry Cup team had a fine victory away at Stoke-by-Nayland but the Thornton Cup team went down to a strong Boyce Hill team at home.
In an uphill battle the Thornton Cup team went down 10½ matches to 4½, in this scratch competition Colchester's aggregate handicaps were 25 more than Boyce Hill's, and it showed. In the morning's foursomes Colchester went 4&1 down with just the
Jason and
Dan Nicholls pairing getting a point.
In the afternoon
Jason and
Dan Nicholls' again collected points with a win and a half.
John Blackmore got his win and
Cai James, playing one of their plus one handicappers, got a half along with
Keith Newnham.
Iain Cruickshank's Curry Cup team tucked away a 10½ to 7½ win at the start of a weekend of glorious early spring weather.
In the competition six players are required to have an aggregate of no less than 40 handicap and six no less than 75.
After the mornings foursomes were shared 3 wins each, the afternoon singles was where Colchester eased away.
Lewis Barber lost out to
Matt Eves but a straight run of six wins through
Ollie Allison,
Tom Rothery,
Stuart Macaulay, John Redden, Adam Lock and
Paul Smith put Colchester firmly in the drivers seat.
Dean Brack pulled one back for Stoke with a two up victory over
David Newley but
Mickey Potter sealed victory beating Tim Dickens 4&2.
Kyle Appleton surprisingly lost to
Dan Wiggins 8&7.
Dave Humberstone and
Ian Collet halved their match and
Steve Holland lost on the last to
Rob Benson making the final score 10½ to 7½.
The ladies held a Stableford where
Jane Lochore carded 38 points for an impressive win. Playing off 22 handicap she had her better nine on the back where she used her handicap sensibly and returned 20 points.
Carol Irvine (36) scored 37 points to take second place with both
Fiona Prentice (20) and
Sharon Manby (30) returning 36 points to take third and fourth.
Janet Austin (24) with 35 took fifth.
A men's' Stableford saw
Tim Rogers take the plaudits with 37 points.
Rogers, playing off 10 slid above
Andrew Patrick (8) after a countback.
Les Daughtrey (16) and
Dick Bokenham (12) were again only separated after a countback when both returned 36 points.
In the annual Tankard match first played against Ipswich Golf Club in 1931 the Captain's team came out victors for the fourth year running with a final result if 5 1/2 to 3 1/2.
