Competition news

Matthew Michael had a deserved victory in the Elmstead Cup at Colchester Golf Club.

Presented to the Club in 1920 when the then Elmstead Golf Club closed, this competition, traditionally played for over the Easter Weekend, is first a qualifier with the top eight players competing in a knockout with the final to be played on Easter Monday.

Michael, playing off 10 had won his place by beating Bill Eke(5), who had earlier won the qualifier with a nett 65 and Alan Sharrocks (2). His opponent was David Barnes(12) who's passage to the final was over Mark Culley(10) and John Waterson(8). The final was refereed by Ian Parry who himself had qualified but was knocked out by Waterson.

An excellent match ensued, with Barnes ahead by one after the ninth. Michael, after a great bunker shot for a par on the twelfth, went three down to an excellent Barnes birdie.

Getting one back on the 13th Michael clawed another back on the 14th, a hole he had eagled against Sharrocks the day previous. Standing on the 15th just the one down he went on to win the match on the 18th one up. Both players struck the ball well, played below their handicaps and provided an excellent and tenacious final.

Bank Holiday Mondays at CGC means mixed golf, in this case greensomes, where Gill and Barrie Minns scraped by Judith and Roger Robertson after a countback to take the victory. Both pairs returning 40 points.

Janet Austin and Ian Coleman took third place with 39 points with Maureen Crosbie and Bill Eke leading fourth place with 36 points after a countback from Sharon and Peter Manby and Claire and David Croger.

The Vets Section are now well into their season, having played four of their series of matches. They entertained Hintlesham at home in their third match and were able to chalk up their first victory having lost their two away matches to Gosfield and Stoke-by-Nayland. On Wednesday they played their fourth match against Braintree, click here to see how they got on.

Colchester Juniors hosted Ipswich in the first round of the Royal British Legion Junior KO Challenge. Each team consists of two pairs playing matchplay better ball with Hambro scoring when the holes are played out to the end.

Colchester's first pair of Cai James and Max Maynard got the better of their match by just the one hole. The second pair of Dab Nicholls and Charley Hatley after a shaky start played excellent golf to win five up securing Colchester the victory by six holes.
