Round up
Roger Wright tucked up Colchester Golf Club's first major competition of the year when he won the Cooper Bland Cup last weekend.
In Colchester's oldest competition, first presented in 1910, five handicapper Wright was just three over par to return a nett 68 and take first spot from four others all just one shot behind on 69.
A birdie on the second hole set Wright in good a good place for his round. Turning on the ninth, one over par, it was all to play for. Two more bogeys did not deter him and a solid par on the eighteenth saw him safely home.
Second place was awarded to Michael Mayes (12) after the countback with Jim Wilkinson (9) third. Stuart MacAulay (5) and Kyle Appleton (12) made up the four all returning 69.
Annie Johnston playing off fourteen handicap won the ladies medal by three clear shots from Julie Dicks (13) who returned 74 nett. Johnston's win was sealed when she finished her round with the last five holes equating to level par.
Janet Tebutt (25) was next in with a 76 with Nerys Horrocks and Patricia Walker (25) both returning 77s.
Colchester's Youth Shield team entertained Five Lakes and playing off scratch they produced a good 4&1 win for Colchester. Josh Coleman taking his match 6&4, Dan Nicholls won his 4&2 and Harry Hills 6&5. Louisa Storey had an outstanding 9&7 victory and Cai James losing out on the 17th 2&1.
In the Norman Plum, Colchester lost to a whitewash by Bentley losing both the three home and away matches, the final score being six matches to nil.
In a Walk-on-Stableford Joe Williams (5) produced an exceptional par equalling round of 70 to give him 41 points. His round was all pars with the exception of a birdie on the par five ninth hole, which was then balanced out with a bogey on the seventeenth.
He won the Walk-on by three shots from James Angel(3) who returned 38 points with Scott Vass (15) in third returning 37.
In the Bank Holiday Mixed Greensomes Bill Eke and Maureen Crosbie romped home with 43 points, leaving the field trailing by four. Just hanging on to their tails were Ian and Maureen Devenish with a credible 39 points. Wollowing in joint third place with 38 points each were the pairings of Dave Blackmore and Alison Clare and Barrie and Gill Minns.
They emerged victorious at the 14th with a 6&4 win.
