Round up
Inspiration had clearly shone brightly after holding the Essex Ladies County Championship. The Colchesters Ladies' Section enjoyed the course in immaculate condition on their weekly Stableford on Tuesday, 23 May. Nerys Horrocks(22) carded an impressive 41 points beating Alison Cordran (25) closely on countback. Horrocks had an extremely strong back 9 with 22 points, narrowly topping Cordran's back 9 of 21 points.
The third event held in memory of young member Rob George took place on a beautiful sunny Thursday, 25 May, with all proceeds raised going towards the Rob George Foundation. 23 teams played an Am-Am format with the victors Carol and Alan Irvine, Caroline Slagle and Norman Angus with 87 points.
Colchester Golf Club men suffered a home defeat against Stowmarket in the team's second Curry Cup match. After the morning's foursomes CGC's first pairing had secured a good 4&3 win, however Stowmarket squeezed out 5 wins from the following foursomes matches. It was all down to the afternoon's singles, where Colchester tried their best to claw the matches back, and finished on a respectable 6 1/2 total afternoon points. Scores on the doors, Stowmarket finished on a total of 10 ½ points to Colchester's 7 ½ points.
A men's Stableford saw Martin Webb(9) steal the glory with a very respectable 39 points, he carded a total of 11 pars and 1 birdie with a fine back nine of 22 points to win the Sunday competition. Separated by only one Stableford point, Philip Davies (20) secured second place with 38 points on countback.
Unfortunately Colchester suffered a further a narrow defeat of 5&4 in their home match Jubilee against PlayGolf in the Jubilee Cup.
Bank Holiday Mondays at CGC means mixed golf, in this case the Jean Ingleton Salvers competition. Husband and wife Peter and Sharon Manby finished with a comfortable score of 38 points in this foursomes Stableford competition.
Only two shots clear of second place winners, Ian Coleman and Caroline Slagle finished on 36 points, tightly followed by the Club's immediate past Captain Vic Pomphrett and Helen Tarttelin on 35 points.
