Ladies tuition holiday

For the first time, Colchester Pro's are running a ladies tuition trip to Portugal in March next year. We are staying in the fabulous 5* Dona Filipa Hotel in Vale de Lobo.

The trip is 5 days, 2 hours coaching each morning concentrating on all the various parts of the golf game. The coaching sessions will be followed with 4 rounds of golf at the top courses in the Algarve.

I think this is a great opportunity to improve your golf, with coaching and a competition running throughout the whole week.

We are holding a drinks reception on arrival, as well as 2 evening meals included in the trip.

There are only limited spaces available on this trip, so please contact the shop if interested.

We are also contemplating a similar trip for the men's section, so if this is of interest to you, please contact Chris/Mark.

Competition news

Round up

The County Standard Silver competition has been contested since 1984 and seventy nine members battled it out on the 4th June. The scoring was very good and this reflected the excellent course conditions and good weather.

There was a three way tie for the Trophy with four under par 66's recorded. Mark Culley (10) was declared the winner on countback, after his two over par back nine, from Jim Maltby (18) and Roger Wright (5).

The Boudica Bowl, an annual mixed event between five local clubs was played for at Colchester on 3rd June.

Having last won the event in 2013, Colchester were not only proud to have hosted the Boudica Bowl but to have won this prestigious event.

All Colchester's six teams recorded good scores however pride of place went to members Mike Withers and Helen Tarttelin and Rob and Nesta James who both amassed an impressive 42 points each.

Stewart Ness
Club Captain partnering Lady's Captain Jane Madge carded 32 points, Paul Smith and Joan Cotterill with a combined handicap of 17 went on to produce 34 points, Bill Eke and Maureen Crosbie playing off 14 returned a steady 36 points and lastly Roger and Judith Robertson returned a credible 38 points playing off a combined handicap of 11. Colchester were clear winners with 158 points and Harwich fought a close contest for second place with 132 points.

The Ladies Windfall qualifier was competed for on the 30th May, Shelley Persent (17) destroyed the field with an impressive 44 points. Her score was built around her front nine where she was just two over par and recorded 25 points. Gillian Crayston (23) was a distant second with a creditable 36 points and Beverley Parker (20) finished third on countback with 35 points.

Colchester's Ladies Bronze team met Forrester Park at home on Wednesday, 31 May. Our three final singles matches were extremely well fought with Pip MacAulay (20) wining 5 &4 Claire Croger (21) finishing 1 up and Catherine Chick (21) who secured a great 7&6 win.

Colchester's Ladies Silver shield team experienced an unfortunate home defeat to the strong team of Rochford Hundred Golf Club with a final result of 4&1. Colchester was battling against three handicaps under a handicap of 6. Jane Reed(10) our final singles match finished strong and managed to put a point on the score board for Colchester having won 1up.

Fourteen Junior's competed in the Centenary Medal Competition on 1st June. Dan Nicholls (4) was victorious with a score of 75, this included two birdies on the front nine.

Max Maynard
(7) was a close second with 77 and Sam Jackson edged out his brother on countback for third with a 79.

In the handicap event Charlie Allison (21) took the honours with a nett 66 and received a two shot handicap reduction.

Both John Waterson and Dave Humberstone are into the last 16 of The Essex Match Play Championship, after winning their respective singles matches.

John Waterson's home game was against Ian Nicholson from "The Burstead". John was never down in the match and at the turn was 3 up. He eventually managed a 4/3 victory.

Dave Humberstone played Simon Meddle away at Thorpe Hall. Dave was 2 up at the turn and although he was only 1 up on the 18th tee, he secured the win with a par 4 on the last.
