Sheila and
John Dornan made it a family affair when they won the Paxman Trophy last weekend at Colchester Golf Club.
Presented to the Club to Celebrate Paxman's Centenary in 1965 this foursomes Stableford, in any membership combination, is a tough nut to crack.
The Dorman's received eighteen shots and used them to return 40 points and narrowly defeat
Alan Sharrocks and
Cai James after a countback.
Sharrocks and
James who received just two shots put in an extraordinary round to get to their 40 points. Ruing a bad start were
Barrie Minns and
Pete Manby (13) who recorded a strong finish to score 39 and got third place, with
Carol and
Alan Irvine (24) in fourth with 37 points.
Sharrocks and
James comfortably won the Turner Scratch foursomes cup for their gross 68 in the medal that ran concurrently.
64 ladies played in the Club's Guest Day with a shotgun start, they played in fours with the best two scores counting. It was the in-form
Catherine Chick and
Haley Joel with their guests
Anne Gates (Wheathill, Somerset) and
Jennie Bowden (PlayGolf, Colchester) who cracked in 97 points to take first spot from the ladies' captain
Jane Madge with guests
Viv Dale and
Phyllis Boddy (both Harwich and Dovercourt) and
Gill Barke (Braintree) who collectively returned 87 points to secure second.
Nearest the pin for guests was held on the 8th and was won by
Rosalie Skinner (Purdis Heath) and for members on the 16th
Gill Crayson.
Dave Humberstone won his home, 4th round Essex Matchplay game, 4&2 against
Harry Brown (Ballards Gore).
Dave now progresses to the Q/Final stages.
Sunrise golf is not played often but with 5.30a.m. start it is understandable. Vying with the greenkeepers for the course it was
Pat Kettle (18) who lead the way to breakfast with an impressive 38 points.
Mike Sutton (8) was next in line with 37 points. Joint third with 36 points and ready for the full English were
Mike Kettle (13) and
Jason Nicholls (0).
The Clubs final match in the Curry Cup, away against Finn Valley, was a 12-6 loss, which means that it is unlikely they will qualify from the leagues to the semi-finals. The ladies' teams this year after a promising start are all in a similar position despite the Silver Trophy team having a 3&2 win over Boyce Hill last week.
Colchester's Vets entertained Frinton this week. Going down 6&2 did not dampen their spirits. With wins by
Mike and
Bernhard Hart along with
John Champ and
David Humberstone the team look forward to their next match with ever increasing optimism.
