Round up Steward Ness hosted his Captain’s Day at Colchester Golf Club last Saturday. Holding a four-ball best two scores to count competition, the team of Stuart Fisher, Nigel Balls, Andy King and Matthew Michael won the day by just one point returning a score of 103.
Playing off the men’s card ladies received three extra shots and the team of Judith Robertson, Joan Cotterill, Catherine Chick and Alison Clare certainly made the best of it with their score of 102 which put them in second place. In third place on 101 points were Bill and Dan Eke, Dave Blackmore and Helen Tarttelin. A yellow ball on the par threes was played in rotation and scored double certainly helped team scores and on the par threes scores of eleven plus were reported. Whilst on the fourth Mark Baker ran a charity Beat-the-Pro competition on behalf of the Captain. This raised over #450 for Autism Anglia.
The Captain had a number of individual prizes and they went to Peter Duley, Julie Ruscoe on the 8th, Matthew Michael, Helen Tarttelin on the 13th, and Paul Smith, Maureen Crosbie on the 16th all for nearest the pin. Adam Lock had the longest drive on the 15th.
It was also Open week at the Braiswick course with the ladies holding theirs on the Tuesday. With 18 clubs represented from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex competition was always going to be wholehearted.
It was a team from Stockbrook Manor comprising Pauline Boswell, Gaye Ordford, Anne Howes and Trisha Patterson who took first spot with 92 points. They were followed in, six points back, by Sue Patrick, Rosina Cole, Gina Macmillan and Ann Longman from Playgolf and with 83 points were Jane Izod, Sarah Gotts, Judith Bedwell and Rachel Goldsmith from Diss and Halesworth.
Sunday, the club hosted a mixed open. Again it was well supported by 36 pairs from twenty clubs. The winning pairing were Joe and Pauline Nixon from Chelmsford on 46 points. John and Norma Davison from Bentley were second with 45 points. The Burstead provided third place with Paul and Helen Williams scoring 44 points.
Norma Davison took nearest the pin on the 16th and Steven Woods on the fourth for the men. The ladies longest drive was Brentwood’s Larayne Heath and for the men and enjoying his Captain weekend was Stewart Ness.
Ann Bedford from The Essex had the joy of holing in one on the 8th.
Colchester's ladies Munroe Foursomes team, of Trish Wilson and Louisa Storey, playing away at Gosfield Lakes won one up against Langdon Hills putting them into the semi-finals of this County competition.
The Vets indifferent results in their friendlies continues having lost to Felixstowe Ferry at Colchester by 3½ to 4½.
