Round up Nick Clare and Catherine Chick swooped up the Cant Cups at Colchester Golf Club last weekend.
Presented to the Club in 1920 this mixed foursomes medal competition is highly prized and Clare playing off 17, and the in form Chick off 21 won it handsomely. Their score of 70 was some 1½-point clear of Lorrie (7) and Janet Austin (24) who came in second.
Third place, after a countback, was taken by Bill Eke (5) and Annie Johnston (12) from Mike Withers (10) and Philippa Deman (9).
The ladies played for the MacMillan Spoon and it was Joan Cotterill (25) who carried away the prize in this medal competition. Cotterill’s steady golf and a good return on the par threes allowed her nett 70 to sneak one shot ahead of second placed Maureen Devenish (16).
Devenish had six pars on her way home, it was not enough to overtake Cotterill but good enough to place her one shot above Judith Robertson (14) who was hard on her heels in third spot on a course par equaling 72.
Janet Wilson (36) and Cathy Burchell (10) both returned nett 73s to share 4th place.
Shot of the day undoubtedly went Allison Cordran who holed-out on the 8th.
Colchester introduced an interesting twist to the Sunday Stableford, each player being given, at random, the Stableford converted score of a player participating in the final round of the Open at Royal Birkdale.
The competition at Colchester badly disrupted by violent showers, produced some interesting results. Philip Davies (19) paired with Russell Henley (40+39 pts) won after a count back from the pairing of Ian Parry (8) and Zach Johnson (39+40).
Geoff Lawrenson (14) paired with Alex Noren took third with 77 points from Iain Cruickshank (8) and Arron Baddley.
Roger Wright (4) was badly let down by Charl Schwartzel who could only add 35 points to Wright’s competition equaling top score of 40 points. If only Schwartzel had known he may have tried harder!
On a day promising rain John Powell (26) returned an impressive 38 points in the mid-week Stableford. He was closely followed in by John Davis (16) who returned 37 points and George Shelmerdine (14) on 34 took third place. The final of the ladies' Mackenzie Foursomes Cup was played out during the week. This competition is a knockout and is another long established competition first played for in 1949. This year Maureen Devenish and Hayley Joel had a 5&3 win over Liz Lennox and Maureen Crosbie. |
