Louisa Storey who ended up third had been slightly ahead of Deman throughout the last round and it wasn’t until the final three holes that Deman sneaked ahead with a three, four, seven finish as opposed to Storey’s five, five, six.

Scott Vass won the Hospice Cup by two clear shots on the Sunday following the Pro-Am.

With the course at its summer best, and the greens like closely mown carpets, Vass’s win from his fifteen handicap was well earned. The back bone of his round were his eight pars along with a birdie on the eighth.

Josh Coleman (4) took second spot and the lowest gross of the day of 71. His card was a model of consistency with four birdies, five bogeys and nine pars giving his 39 points.

Ollie Wilson (14) was placed third with a Stableford point score of 38.

There were four players breathing down his neck, just one point further back on 37. They were lead by Glen Clark (6) followed by Bill Eke (5), Mike Sutton (8) and Jon Jaggs (14).

Run concurrently with the Hospice Cup is the St Helena Bowl for handicaps of above 18 where Colin Brodie (19) returned 34 points to claim the trophy from Joan Cotterill (24) who had 31. Robin Tucker (20) took third spot on 31 points.

Colchester Golf Club held its annual Pro-Am at the Braiswick course. Now in its thirtieth year with the excess proceeds of the event all going to St Helena Hospice it continues to be one of the highlights of Colchester Golf Club’s diary. Poundfield Products were the events major sponsors.

The winning team, with an impressive score of 19 under par, was SRC Aggregates, manned by Darren Tucker, Dave Reeve, and Paul Springall and steered by the professional James Webber (Three Rivers).

Steady golf is always the key to a winning team and Webber added the gloss with five birdies and an eagle.

Second placed team, one behind was CGC Juniors with Louisa Storey, Dan Nicholls and Sam Jackson with the pro Steve Hambling (Braintree). They were so close; they just needed that little extra to make the top spot.

Third placed team on sixteen under was the BC Designs team of Barrie Cutchie, Phil Clarke and Keith Newnham. Their pro was Chris Cutchie, Colchester’s joint Head Professional.

James Scade took the professional prize. Representing Little Channels he carded a five under-par 65 to take first place on his own.

This event is now in its 30th year and much praise was given to the quality and standard of the course and congratulations must go to Keith Chinnery and his team.

Forty-eight golfers were vying for a share of the prize-pot and Scade eased past them all, despite two bogeys his seven birdies made him a comfortable winner.

Nick Cains representing Swaffham and Ray Russell (Centurion Club) shared second place, they both returned 67s just one ahead of four players sharing fourth position.

The four were Three Rivers’ David Salisbury; Ian Ellis from Great Yarmouth, Murray White and Colchester based Ben David.

Impressively nearest the pin in two and doubling up was Jamie Scott on the 3rd and the 14th sponsored by Colchester Golf Academy and Salmon Cars. Steve Parnell was nearest in two on the 11th which had Potters Plumbing as the sponsor.

Nearest the pin on the par threes, was Steve Butler on the 4th, with Graham Baxter as sponsor. On the 8th Patrick Logan and on the 16th Lionel Keightley, both prizes being sponsored by Mr. Wheeler. On the 13th, sponsored by Rathgar Properties was Dave Arnold. Phil Clarke took the longest drive with Poundfield Products sponsoring this prize.
