Ladies Competition Sara Cock and Claire Hebden were the winners in Colchester Golf Club’s first ladies competition able to be played this year. After nearly four months of weather restricted playing time the qualifying competition for the ladies Mackenzie Foursomes provided a strong field for the eight pairs that go into the knockout stages. Cock and Hebden belying their 30 handicaps returned a score of nett 80 on a course with no run on the ball making it play very long. Philippa Deman and Heather Dennis playing off 15, half their combined handicaps, mirrored their score, losing out in the countback. Third spot was taken by Alison Clare and Janet Austin (22½) just half a shot behind them with Maureen Devenish and Hayley Joel (20½) in fourth on 81½. Other qualifiers were Beverley Parker and Pip Macauley, Cathy Burchell and Julie Dicks, Katie Johnson and Bridgett Whitworth and Hannah Butcher and Daphne Bloomfield.
87th annual Tankard match During the week the Club hosted the 87th annual Tankard match against Ipswich. Despite Colchester’s winning sequence over the last four years this year Ipswich Golf Club took the honours, five matches to three. Colchester’s Captain Mike Withers handed the trophy over to the newly appointed Captain of Ipswich Golf Club, Chris Meyhew. Withers had done his best to hold the team together by winning his match but a determined Ipswich side prevailed.
Sunshine on Saturday heralded a new event for Colchester an Interclub match between Chelmsford, Frinton and The Warren Golf Clubs and hosted by Colchester. The match was easily won by The Warren who were twelve points clear of Colchester who came in second. The Leslie Wood team lost a knife-edge match away against Romford. The morning foursomes was their nemesis with Romford leading 3½ to 1½. The first three singles matches went in Colchester’s favour and scores were levelled but a surge by Romford took the match score to nine matches to six and away from Colchester. All was not gloom and doom on the county front with the Men’s Seniors romping home at their Braiswick course against Maylands 8½ against 2½. With three of the first five matches going Colchester’s way the ground was set and although most matches went to the 17th or 18th Colchester ran out worthy winners. In the first round of the Inter-Club Youth Shield (Handicap Division) Colchester had a tough home match against Frinton but came out winners by three matches to two. |
