Colchester Golf Club’s 100 Club held its annual Golf Day at the Braiswick course with the ladies vice-captain, Maureen Devenish claiming the honours.

Fifteen handicapper Devenish, whose recent form indicated she was due for a win, she had been the best placed lady in the past two mixed competitions, won the J.V.Wright Cup after a countback against John Dornan (7) both returning 38 points.

The 100 Club, presently run by Mike Jones was first formed in 1994 and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for projects within the club. It is presently contributing to the projected upgrade of the practice facilities.

Three others of the 70 competitors returned 37 points headed by Ralph Charles (13) along with Tom Rothery (8) and Allen Bevan (24). Nearest the Pin winners were Maureen Devenish, Alan Hyde, Heather Dennis and Gary Driver.

Romany Foster carded an impressive 41 points in the Ladies Stableford during the week which was a just reward for the hard work she is putting into her 28 handicap.

Foster was followed in at a distance by the rest of the field led, in second place, by Penny Allen (34) with 35 points. There were six ladies vying for the minor placings all of whom had thirty four points. It was the inform Devenish who got the nod after the countback with Gill Crayson (21), Janet Austin (21), Hannah Butcher (22) Jane Lochore (23) and Jo Mager (19) following.

The Club held its Mixed Open on Sunday with forty-two pairs from twenty-nine different clubs taking part.

On a dry blustery day the scoring was very good with the eventual winners being Pauline and Steve Boswell from Stock Brook Manor with 44 points.

Runners up were Sue and Bob Boon from Chelmsford with 43 points after a count back from Raddavan Monsell who gave the competition an international flavour as she is from Montpellier, along with her partner Terry Stevenson from a more local Mill Brook in Kent. They took third place.

Ladies nearest the pins on par three's went to Pauline Nixon (Chelmsford) and Angela Robinson (The Essex). The Men's to Rob Fenn (Romford) and Steve Boswell (Stock Brook Manor)

Whilst enjoying drinks on the patio area prior to the evening buffet there was even an impromptu fly past by the Red Arrows which rounded off a very successful day superbly organized by Dave Blackmore.

The art of persistence

The FedExCup Playoffs get underway this Thursday at the Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey - although Rory McIlroy has already confirmed he won’t be taking part. The world no. 7 has taken a few weeks off in order to recharge the batteries after a disappointing showing at the PGA Championship earlier this month.

Justin Rose, who is currently fourth in the FedExCup standings, leads the British charge and will be aiming to pip Dustin Johnson to the number one spot. That being said, recent PGA Championship and U.S. Open winner Brooks Koepka is in fine form and could be the man to beat in this year's grand finale.

Closer to home, there was a feel-good story over the weekend as Paul Waring, on his 200th attempt, finally won on the European Tour. It wasn’t easy, but he managed to hold his nerve in a play-off against South African Thomas Aiken to win the Nordea Masters. It’s a great lesson for all of us in the art of persistence and determination when it comes to golf; if you keep on working on your game, it will eventually pay off.
