Hatley’s week did not end at Stoke, on Friday she was at Frinton Golf Club to defend the ELCGA’s Logan Trophy, a handicap knockout competition which she had won last year. Playing three handicapper Katy Yates from Clacton, Hatley triumphed 2&1. A sparkling performance played out under the equalling sparkling display by the Red Arrows at nearby Clacton Air-Show. Hatley also contributed to the Scratch Youth Sheild’s win over Garons Park played at Stoke-by-Nayland on Sunday putting Colchester Juniors into the final of this competition for the second year running. There were victories for Josh Coleman (2 up), Olly Allison (3&2), Tom Vass (1up) and Hatley (6&5) with Dan Nicholls who was three down at one stage losing out on the 18th. Ladies EG Medal Maureen Devenish continued her good run of form with a win in the Ladies EG Medal. Fourth and fifth places with scores of 72 were taken by Carla Holroyd (31) and Bev Parker (20).
Mixed Greensomes Star performances were put in on Bank Holiday Monday when the Captain, Mike Withers and the Ladies’ Captain, Renate Clarke won the mixed greensomes with 40 points.
Texas Scramble Michael Blakebrough, Peter Quinn and Scott Vass won Sunday’s Texas Scramble with a score of 56 some way ahead of Mike Akin, Michael mays, and Richard Watts on 58.7 with third place just 0.1 behind of Romy Bozier, Steve Bozier and Jess Woodall. |
Just 4 weeks to go The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic. There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia. |
The proposed changes to the Rules of Golf are less than six months away, so we thought we’d take a look at one introduction that you may not have been aware of... |
Under the current Rules of Golf, if you strike the ball more than once in the course of a stroke (i.e. a double hit), you take a one-stroke penalty in addition to the stroke that was made. However, under the proposed changes, if you accidentally hit the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, there is no penalty (new Rule 10.1a). This is because the R&A thought it was unfair and unnecessary to penalise a player for an accidental strike. All in all, a sensible amendment to the current Rules of Golf in our opinion. Let us know your thoughts. |
