Major Scratch Competitions Last weekend there were two major scratch competitions, the seniors Scratch Cup and the John Thorogood Trophy. Jason Nicholls turned the tables on his son and won the John Thorogood with an impressive gross 68. Alan Sharrocks was second with a 70 and Cai James third with a 73. Dan Nicholls with a 75 was fifth. The Seniors Scratch fell to Bill Eke with a gross 74. He was followed closely in by Alan Macnaught who had a 75. Hillary Percent’s 77 was good enough for third. |

Curry Cup Colchester Golf Club’s Curry Cup team progressed to the final after a convincing win against Three Rivers. The semi-final was played at Colne Valley, the organisers of the competition, and provided tight golf for most of the day. After the morning foursomes it was all square three matches each. The first three matches in the twelve singles went Colchester’s way. But the spring was taken out of team captain Iain Cruickshank’s step when the next three were won by Three Rivers. |
|
It soon became apparent that the balance of the matches out on the course were all Colchester’s and the final score of 11½ to 6½ gave Colchester a comfortable win. The final is played at Benton Hall in a weird twist of fate, against Benton Hall. Colchester Golf Club’s autumn period is hectic period and following on from the Club Championship the Intermediate and Rabbits cups are held.
Intermediate Cup It was Richard Shackell (19) who claimed the Intermediate Cup with a round of 67 nett. Just one shot ahead of Ashley Yates (16) and Peter Quinn (15) who returned 68s.
Rabbits Cup Run alongside this competition was the infamous Rabbits Cup where Jim Bentley playing off 24 returned a nett 67 to claim the trophy. Sean Carlin (22) returned 69 to take third place and Robin Tucker (21) with a nett 70 claimed third.
Medal Competition In the Medal Competition Jess Woodall (9) had the best round of the day with a nett 65 to ensure top spot, followed in by David Barnes’ nett 66 to take second with Tom Durrell (11) third with a nett 67. |
Over 60’s Bowl The Over 60’s Bowl is a keenly contested competition in the ladies section and this year it was the current ladies captain Renate Clarke (26) who held sway with 41 points, two clear of Julie Dicks (14) and Pat Kettle (16) both returning 39s. Katie Cooper (18) and Cherie Clark (22) were 4th, both on 38.
Bentley Green During the week Philippa Deman (11) beat Catherine Chick (19) on the 16th hole in the final of the Bentley Green. |

The heat is on With the clock ticking down to the start of the Ryder Cup, all eyes are on the players who could make the difference at Le Golf National in Paris. The BMW Championship certainly gave us an insight into who’s shaping up nicely, with Keegan Bradley - who didn't make the USA Team - pipping Europe's Justin Rose to the title on the first play-off hole after both players finished on -20. It wasn't all bad news for Rose though, as finishing 2nd meant he became the world's number one golfer for the first time in his career. The conclusion of the BMW Championship also saw Jim Furyk make his final Captain's Pick for Team USA, opting for big-hitter Tony Finau - despite Xander Schauffele's fine finish at the BMW. Finau might not win many tournaments, but he is remarkably consistent and a huge hitter, with 11 top-10 finishes in 2018. Schauffele will feel hard done by, but is certainly one to look out for next season. Meanwhile, Europe Team Captain Thomas Bjorn may be ruing a missed opportunity to choose Matt Fitzpatrick as one of his wildcard picks, after the Englishman beat Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard in a play-off to win the Omega European Masters title in Switzerland. Fitzpatrick won the same tournament last year, and becomes the first golfer since the great Seve Ballesteros to defend the trophy – so he’s certainly following the right footsteps! |
Sightlines on putters might seem like a nice design, but they are there for a reason as they help you aim your putts more accurately, and help you centre the ball on your putter. But with so many different styles, it can be hard to know which one will aid you the most. |
It’s up to you If you’re a fan of the classic blade putters, why not try Cleveland’s Huntington Beach 1 model? Striking the centre of the ball is made simple with a single sightline on the blade’s cavity. You’ll also have a more consistent roll with your putts, thanks to the precision milled face that is a key feature on Cleveland's putters. |
|
Something different Alternatively, if you prefer a more modern look, try out Cleveland’s TFI 2135 Satin Rho putter. The raised sightline on this range of putters helps you to align the putter more easily, regardless of where your eyes are over the ball. Another great feature is the contrasting white sightline on a black backdrop, resulting in improved focus every time.
