Moy Cup Craig Bulow returned a fantastic score of plus ten to win Colchester Golf Club’s rearranged Moy Cup. Having been rained off three weeks ago this competition, originally presented to the Club in 1910 by a local coal merchant, can rarely have been won with a better score in its long history. Scored against the course his plus ten belied his handicap and an effective gross score of 72 he was some eleven shots below his allocated thirteen handicap. Bulow started his round with two birdies and ended the front nine level par. Dropping just two shots on the back gave him a round he is unlikely to forget and he ran-away with the competition. |
However Alan Sharrocks (2) also made his mark on the day in claiming second spot. He returned a plus five score, equivalent to a gross 67 and it could have been lower. Sharrock’s front nine was four under par and he had the course there for the taking, but two bogies and a birdie on the back takes nothing away from what was the best competitive round of golf at the club in the year. Third place went to Peter Quinn (13) with plus four and two shared fourth spot with Jake Hughes (12) and Andrew King (15) both returning plus three. These scores were all the more remarkable as the day started miserably and got worst. Heavy drizzle spoilt many-a-round in the afternoon in this, the last boarded competition of the year. Despite the weather it was well supported with 110 members taking part. |

Daily Mail Foursomes Trish Wilson and Vicky Frost will represent Colchester’s ladies in next year’s Daily Mail Foursomes. The seven and sixteen handicappers won the qualifying competition at the club with a total of 35 Stableford points. Second placed were Hannah Butcher and Daphne Bloomfield with 33 points after a countback against Julie dicks and Judith Robertson. |
Hodson Trophy On the weekend the Club held the Hodson Trophy which is a three ball event with each team being made up of a junior plus male and female members. In all there were sixteen teams competing, with the team of Cody Zhou, Trish Wilson and Russell claiming first place after a countback from Oreon Clarke, Janet Austin and Dave Humberstone. Eight year old George Clarke paired up with his dad Glen for his first ever competition and in so doing became the youngest competitor of the day. |

An ace week for Master Eddie The British Masters took place at Walton Heath in Surrey last week and was hosted by the local favourite, Justin Rose. The tournament had a stark weather contrast from start to finish with conditions declining and making it a real grind for the players. The caddies were certainly tested during the final round trying to keep their players warm and dry. It was a day of umbrellas, waterproofs and wearing the correct layering, which at this time of year can help or hinder your round. The tournament winner was Eddie Pepperell who dealt with the conditions the best and led from start to finish to claim a two-shot victory. Eddie’s highlight of the week was his impressive hole-in-one on Thursday at the ninth hole, earning £20,000 for charity and a celebratory bottle of wine from the tournament host. Pepperell now moves up to 33rd in the world rankings and with it an invite to next year’s biggest tournaments including his first trip to The Masters at Augusta. When you step onto the tee with a driver in hand, there are two thoughts in most golfers' minds: "Hit it far, and hit it straight". Both of these were easier said than done, until Titleist released its new TS2 and TS3 drivers earlier this year... |
Both of these drivers are designed to bring more speed to your game, which results in greater distance. It's as simple as that. The Titleist TS2 is all about forgiveness. In fact, it has the highest MOI that Titleist has ever produced, which means it's more resistant to twisting at impact, for longer and straighter shots. However, if you have a consistent miss with your drives, the TS3 will be perfect for you as we can set it up to counter your destructive shot. With two models to choose from, it's more important than ever to come and see us for a custom fitting. What numbers will you be putting up on the Titleist board? |
