Winter Leagues Since mid-October the men section at Colchester Golf Club have been slugging it out in the qualifying matches of their Winter-Leagues. There were 64 pairs split into eight leagues of eight in the original draw and in another year of close competitive golf the top two pairings in each league now go into the knockout stages. From the Saturday Leagues Clive Mason and Scott Vass along with Martin Halls and Danny Simmons were the pairings to qualify from league one, along with Peter Anderson and Duncan Smith and Phil Hayward and Mike Blakebrough from league two. Steve Dack and Steve Sheffield were unlucky not to qualify from this league having had the same number of points as the other two but lost out on matches won. In Sunday’s league one, Matt Black and Ed Pain who along with Sam Tarr and Joe Galzean were the clear winners. In League two Chris Doyle and Andrew Patrick topped out with eleven points over the other qualifiers Bob Potter and Kevin Brett. Having the honour of being the only unbeaten pairing in the competition this year were the Durrell twins, Matt and Tom. Their unbeaten fourteen points made them clear leaders in their league where Donald Parish and Joe Jackson came second with eleven. Qualifying with ten and nine points respectively from a very tight league were John Arnold and John Lynch along with Joseph Jackson and Arian Masud. Scott Strivens and Richard Hayes shared ten points each with Richard Watts and Mike Akin to top their league despite a late surge from Andrew Jones and Dave Burrage. The final two pairs to qualify were John Redden and Mick Potter who along with Mike Withers and Colin Gathercole came out winners in Sunday’s league six.
Ladies 3 Clubs and a Putter Whilst not fully on song the ladies are squeezing in some golf with the latest being a three clubs and a putter competition over 14 holes. Jenny Rose took the honours carding 23 points with Romany Foster being her closest rival on 22 points. There were four ladies returning 21 points lead in by Annie Johnston, then Bridget Whitworth, Roberta Bodsworth and Jasmine Schwier. This week the ladies had a “chat-in” where the new rules were discussed in some detail hosted by members Trish Wilson, Linda Freeman and the Club’s Chairman of Golf Dave Blackmore. |
