Weekly Round Up
During the winter months in the absence men’s individual competitions at Colchester Golf Club groups of members take advantage of the many good golf courses in the region and play away-days. The largest group is organized by Bill Hart and this year they play at five courses. Having played The Essex, Woodbridge and Gog Magog, Thetford and Felixstowe are still to go. Mike Blakebrough returning 34 points took the honours at The Essex with Mike Carroll coming a close second with 33 on a low scoring day. Blakebrough scoring 31 points at Woodbridge was unable to hold first place as Chris Doyle and Tom Rothery both returned 35s. Phil Hayward and Stuart Fisher returned 34s with Mike Carroll again scoring 33. The Away-Day then moved onto Gog Magog outside Cambridge where first place with 36 points was taken by Darren Northover with Andrew Patrick and John Redden in joint second place with 33. Mike Carroll returned 32 to make himself the clear leader in the race for the Mike Lapham Trophy given to the golfer receiving the most aggregate points after playing all the courses. The other group of members regularly playing in away-days during the winter, with Paul Nunny acting as secretary, is the Braiswick Golf Society. Starting at Thetford it was steady play that won the day for Tim Rogers who returned 35 points. Dick Bokenham just missing out with 34 points and Steve Parlett third on 33. Next course the Society played was Woodbridge where Duncan Smith with 36 points led the field in, chased hard by Greg Pye on 35 with Roger Robertson third on 33. Duncan Smith’s good form handsomely carried the day again at Thorpeness with 35 points from Paul Nunny and John White in second both returning 31 points. Mike Smith and Paul Harrison both returned 30. The ladies at the Club continue their competitive golf and on a cold, cold day. Despite the weather 47 ladies played in the competition. For the third week running it was Jenny Rose who came up trumps with 29 points from her 34 handicap in the 14 hole Stableford. This win completed a clean sweep by Rose in the January ladies competitions. Catherine Chick (19) carded a 27 to take second place with Annie Johnston (16) along with Helga Edwards (22) and Beverley Parker (19) all scoring 24 points in joint third. |
