Cystic Fibrosis Stableford Carl White romped away in to win Colchester Golf Club’s first men’s individual competition of 2019, the Cystic Fibrosis Stableford. White returned a stunning 40 points from his 22 handicap in tough conditions. He scored well on the first nine where he registered 22 points which laid an excellent foundation to what was by far his best competitive round of golf. With the weather being diametrically opposed to last week's, with rain and wind added to which the fairways had no run making it a tough course and for some an out of body experience. The conditions did not put members off, ever eager for competitive golf, there were 102 starters for this annual charity competition. Second place on 38 points was firmly occupied by Steve Bozier. Playing off a handicap of ten Bozier handled the conditions well and could have been much better but for doubles at the fourth and ninth holes. His card contained eight pars and two birdies. In such a large field it was no surprise that there were a clutch of players baying for third place with twenty handicapper James Pilgrim, who also returned his best competitive round at the Club, taking the honour after a countback from Keith Newnham (6) and Tom Neale (2) all returning 36 points. Neal’s round is worthy of a special mention in the wintery conditions as he dropped just one shot on the front nine to turn on eighteen points, and on the back he acquired two bogeys but finished with a flourish and ended with a birdie on the eighteenth.
14 Hole Stableford Philippa Macaulay (21) got the nod over Romany Foster (24) in a 14 hole Stableford after a countback when both players returned 30 points in the ladies weekly competition. Macaulay made the best of their weather as the competition was held at the tail end of the false spring, beating by four points her score of two weeks earlier when she also won the 14 hole stableford. In second place with 28 points was Jasmine Schwier (29) with both Annie Johnston (16) and Janet Wilson (32) returning 26 points to take up fourth and fifth spot. |
