Winter League It was five months ago that Matt Black and Ed Pain started on their quest to be Winter League Champions of 2018/19 at Colchester Golf Club. Last week they achieved their goal. Black and Pain playing off seven and thirteen respectively were up against fellow finalists Peter Anderson (11) and Duncan Smith (15). The two pairs had fought their way to the final from the leagues into the knockouts from the 128 players who had started in the competition. In the four ball better ball final both pairs got off to a nervous starts with Black/Pain going one up early on only to have Anderson on the seventh strike the flag with an approach shot which dropped to a few inches. This gave Anderson and Smith a gross birdie which with his shot gave him a nett eagle to even up the scores and make the match all square by the turn. From the nervous start Black and Pain had between them played the first nine to gross par. They kept the pressure on, and apart from a bogey on the fourteenth hole went on to win with a birdie from twenty feet on the 16th with the final score being three holes up with two to play (3&2).
Ladies Stableford Shelley Persent carried the honours in the Ladies Stableford with an impressive 37 points from her eighteen handicap. Starting with a par on the first Persent added a birdie on the fourth hole to enable her to turn with 20 points in the bag. A steady back nine gave her one over handicap making up the 37 points to give her overall victory. Next on the board were three ladies on 35 points. Countback putting them in order with Daphne Bloomfield (31) in second place from Roberta Bodsworth (24) and Bridget Whitworth (16) in fourth. Thirty-three points saw Nesta James (19), Caroline Chambers (23) and Julie Dicks (13) safely over the line.
