On the course... Colchester Golf Club claimed victory over Clacton-on-Sea in the first round of the County run Leslie Wood Team Championship. The Leslie Wood is open to all Essex Golf Clubs with qualifying players having to be of eight handicap and above. Home advantage is always a bonus in County competitions and in wet and dismal weather Colchester made the best of it in the morning’s foursomes coming out 3.5 matches to 1.5 in front. In the afternoon’s 10 singles matches Colin Gathercole lead out Colchester’s team against Craig Garton, a tight match which went down to the last with Gathercole winning one hole up. Mike Blakebourgh was second out and secured his match on the fifteenth hole with a 4&3 victory over Adam Stringer. With these two victories Colchester, under the captaincy this year of Paul Smith needed another three to guarantee the tie. Tom Rothery and Richard Hayes both coming up trumps with a 4&2 win over Clayton Jeffries and a one up victory over Ben Uesdon. The tie sealing match having come earlier from Chris Blakebourgh who had a resounding win over Lee Hale of 7&5 giving Colchester 8.5 points from the 15 available. Colchester’s Sam Jackson lost out to Stacy Wilkinson 5&4 and Louis Partner going down to Ryon Weeks 6&4, the balance of the team adding points to the final score. Shaun Holmes getting the better of Donny Clarke 3&2, Clive Mason 6&5 over Craig Green. With the tie over the honours were halved in the final match between Matt Michaels and James Bettis. The final score in the tie being 11 to 4 in Colchester’s favour. The ladies competed for a Stableford with Cathy Burchell (11), returning two equal halves of 19 points to give her a total of 38 points, won the competition. Romany Foster continued to whittle away at her handicap with a 37 to take second place and Caroline Slagle (29) taking third with 35. Mandy Rix (8), courtesy of an eagle on the 15th, carded a 34 the same score as Janet Austin (21). In Saturday's Walk-On-Stableford Joshua Ely (24) returned the best number to take the honours on 39 points with David Newley (13) and Colin Brodie (21) both returning 38 to take the minor placings. Colchester’s Vets continue to rumble with a 5&3 win over Hintlesham’s Vets in their Monday morning match giving them a three out of three winning start to their friendlies.
