Weekly Round Up Colchester Golf Club’s Thornton Cup team took the scalp of Abridge Golf Club in last weekend’s county matches. In this the scratch team competition, home team Colchester had a ten matches to five victory. Leading three matches to two after the morning’s foursomes Colchester, captained this year by John Blackmore and Alan Sharrocks, were confident but knew they had a hard task ahead. Most of the early matches were down by the fourth hole but it was then the team showed their backbone. Josh Coleman rattled round the course taking his match to one up by the fifteenth before sealing it on the seventeenth. Dan Nicholls overcame early loses of holes and overhauled his opponent to win whilst Tom Neale tucked his match away on the fifteenth to win 5&3. Lewis Barber sealed his match on the fourteenth 5&4. Glenn Clarke was Colchester’s sacrificial lamb as he was playing Harrison Ellis, Abridge’s big hitting and lowest handicapper and went down 4&3. Alan Sharrocks won 8&7 and with Steve Jennings, Roger Wright, Nathan Lowe and Jason Nicholls all getting or being awarded halves, the match was over. The next round is away to Rochford Hundred. The men’s Curry Cup team had an excellent home win over the holders Stowmarket. Winning the morning’s foursomes five to one there was a spring in the step in the afternoon. A crushing 10½ to 1½ score in the afternoon saw Colchester home in comfort. Score highlights in the morning saw the Jackson twins, Sam and Joe, win their foursomes 8&7 and Bill Hart and Micky Potter 5&4. In the singles John Redden had a 6&3 victory and Joe Jackson a 5&4 win. Both Shaun Hughes and Martin Halls had 4&3 victories. A great overall performance by the team. The ladies were not to be ignored. Playing in the Essex Ladies Senior County Championship at Stoke-by-Nayland Mandy Rix and Philippa Deman both qualified for the knockout stages. Rix, who is the Essex Seniors Ladies Team Captain, lead the whole competition after the medal section but fell to Sue Ballard one down in the knockout rounds. Deman also lost at the quarter-final stage, going down 4&3 to Nicky Iles. At the Club Jasmine Schwier knocked another shot off her handicap of 27 by returning all-square in the Morton Trophy, a Par competition against the course. Four ladies returned minus one, Carla Holroyd (31) Sheila Dornan(24), Janet Austin (20) and Roberta Bodsworth (23).
