Competition news

Coronation Cup

Joshua Eley with nett rounds of 67 and 66 swept away all opposition in Colchester Golf Club’s Coronation Cup.

First presented in 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of George VI and the opening of the 18 hole course this competition is played over 36 holes. Eley, playing off 21 handicap, never gave anyone else a look in. his first round put him on top of the leader-board and with an even better second round he was never headed.

After the first round Mark Brown (8) had shared the lead with Eley, both on 67 nett, but he fell off the hot pace in the second but still returned a credible 69 to secure second spot by a two shot margin.

Third place was Oliver Baker (8) with 68 and 70 nett and tied with him was Bill Eke (4) both with 138 totals

The best gross score in the competition went to Tom Neale. Neale playing off a handicap of one had two gross 71s, with a total of five birdies. Cai James (2) with gross scores of 73 and an improved 72 was three shots back on a total of 145..

Lady Captain's Day

Maureen Devenish hosted her Captain's Day earlier in the week and fittingly her team won it!

With two scores counting, plus double on two nominated Joker Holes her team of Trish Wilson, Joan Cotterill and Gillian Whittle scored 98 points to win by one shot.

The second placed team of Jenny McEvoy, Louisa Storey, Romy Bozier and Nikki Bryant were three points ahead of third placed Liz Bainbridge, Jane Kerr, Caroline Chambers and Claire Withnall on 93 points.

Nearest the pins were won by Janet Austin on the 8th and Nikki Bryant on the 13th.

Tour news

Lucky number 17 for Reavie

If Chez Reavie plays the lottery this week then we recommend one of his picks is 17.

The American claimed the Travelers Championship by four shots with a total 17-under-par but despite shooting a joint back-nine record at TPC River Highlands on Saturday with a 7-under 28, a charging Keegan Bradley had his lead down to just one with three to play come Sunday.

Lucky number 17 came to the rescue though as Bradley shot a double bogey at the par 4 seventeenth whilst Reavie sunk a birdie at the same hole to stretch the lead to four where it stayed.

It was Chez Reavie’s second PGA Tour win and first since claiming the Canadian Open in 2008 – a tournament he won with a total score of (yep you guessed it) 17-under par.

Spooky.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
