Millennium Trophy Hotshot Theo Baker was again the star of the show as he claimed his second major competition of the year at Colchester Golf Club. Baker, aged 14, fired a sizzling gross 71 from his seven handicap to win the Millennium Trophy and add to his success in the Elmstead Cup. His 42-point return was a model of consistent golf with 15 pars, bogeys at the 4th and 13th and a tasty birdie at the last. That pushed him three shots clear of another high-flying youngster - Ollie Allison, whose excellent 39 points from 5-handicap featured three birdies at the 5th, 9th and 17th. James Pilgrim, off 19, also returned 39 points but a blob at the third hole proved costly and he dropped back into third on countdown - despite a birdie 4 at the 9th. Jonathan Way, 11, was another to post 39 points and he too was left to rue a costly blob - his coming at the par-3 8th. The 126-strong field generally enjoyed a day of good scoring with Andrew Jones, 23, Catherine Chick, 18, Nick Sinclair, 16, and Arian Masud, 5, returning 38 points. Seven others notched up 37 - Paul Jackson, 9, Andrew Patrick, 9, Sam Tarr, 17, Stuart Bark, 15, Alanna Mathews, 11, Ian Winston, 16 and John Fisk, 24.
Multiplier Stableford Day one of the club’s highly popular Millennium Week saw more than 100 members and guests doing battle in a Multiplier Stableford with the best two scores on each hole counting - sponsored by Mr Wheeler Wine. Winners by a single point on 117 were the team of Annie Johnston, Michael Hare, Catherine Chick and John Dornan. They squeezed out Clive Hebden, Simon Rowe, Lee Smith and Andy Totham who finished with 116 with Bob Potter, John Fisk, John Walkinshaw and Peter Robinson one shot further back on 115.
Junior Captain's Day The Juniors staged their Captains Day with a host of impressive scoring - and a runaway winner. Guy Haines, 22, was helped by a birdie on the 5th as he racked up 22 points on the front nine. A seven on the 14th meant no points but he still amassed another 22 on the back nine for a great 44 total. John Parker, 29, took second place on countback with 39 points from the hugely consistent Arian Masud. Theo Baker was fourth on 38. |
