We hope you had a lovely festive break and are ready & raring to get back out on the course. Alongside our regular features, this week, we also look at which Tour pro set the early pace to get his year off to the perfect start. So, take five minutes, grab a coffee and have a look through.

Competition news

Winter League

Colchester Golf Club’s Winter Leagues are now approaching the knockout stages.

With ten leagues, eight pairs in each, starting the qualifying stages last October all 160 members have squelched and fought their way through their matches to try and qualify for the knockout stages of this ever-popular competition.

Most winters throw up some weather anomaly and it needs no telling that rain has been the one deciding factor this year. So much so that whilst the leagues were scheduled to be finished last weekend the competition had to be extended to allow the remaining matches to be completed.

There are two leagues played on Saturday with Phil Hayward and Michael Blakebrough almost certain to qualify out of one of the leagues. With two pairs qualifying from each league the second qualifier from this league has yet to be determined.

Likewise in Saturday’s second league whilst Chris Blakebrough along with partner Rory Wilson and second pairing Scott Vass and Peter Quinn are both on nine points last year’s finalists Duncan Smith and Peter Anderson are lying with a match in hand and could spoil the party

In Sunday's league one it is too tight to call and any pairing of four could qualify with last years winners Ed Pain and Matt Black in pole position it’s theirs to lose.

Again, in league two, it is too tight to call and with matches to play in league three Donald Parish and Joe Jackson along with Louis Partner and Josh Ely all looking good, but there are still matches to complete.

League four has the father and son pairing of Richard and Guy Haines along with Kris Lee and Ashley Yates both on eight points and poised to qualify.

The familiar pairing of Bill Eke and Stuart Reed crop up in league five who along with Thomas Pitt and Thomas Duffy should get through. League six throws up one clear winning pair, Mike Withers and Colin Gathercole, who on eleven points are unbeaten.

Finally Sunday’s league eight has Keith Jacobs and Terry Barfield in pole position but again in these competitive leagues there are matches to finish and the second spot is, as yet, still up for grabs.

The knockout matches will start in a couple of weeks’ time and weather permitting the aim is to have the final played by the 12th April.

 
Tour news

The early bird(ie)

The early bird catches the worm is how the saying goes and Justin Thomas certainly got his year off to the perfect start with victory in the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

It took a playoff though as Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Reed all ended on -14 despite Schauffele having two putts from 35 feet to win it outright.

It took until the third time round under darkening skies but Thomas stuck a full wedge to within three feet to tap home for birdie and make it three wins from his last seven Tour starts to begin the year in style.

Hands up if you’re still feeling stuffed from the excessive (but highly enjoyable) eating over the festive period...

We’re not going to ask anything too strenuous of you this week as we ease our way into the new year so don’t worry! Instead, take a quick look at the image below and see if any of it looks familiar to you.

With a new season upon us and plenty of new products arriving in your local pro shop over the next few months (more on this in the coming weeks), now’s the perfect time to wave goodbye to the old tatty golf shoes, the worn-out gloves in a pile at the bottom of your bag, and the golf balls with more scuff marks than dimples!

If you’re the type of golfer who keeps on top of their equipment then we salute you but if any of the above rings true, pop by the shop this weekend and give your stuff a winter MOT. We’re always here to help.

A bag for life

Following on from our article above, how many things are you trying to jam into your golf bag before every round? For us, a golf bag is so much more than something to lug your clubs around in; instead, it’s an extension of your locker with a place for everything you might need out on the course.
