Congratulations to this week's winner IainCruickshank with a superb 41points to win the VJ cup. Iain was in thefitting studio doing his yardages this week.Iain also replaced his putting grip to aslightly fatter, Superstroke grip. He commentedon how good this new technique felt, and howpleased he was with his putting performance.Runners up with 40 points were DaveArnold,Stuart Fisherand the in form Jim Wilkinsonall with 40 points.

Jim has just got into the final of the mainmatch play event in the club, the Braiswick. Hewill be taking on Shelley Persentin the final after Shelley defeated RichardWatts in the other semi-finalearlier this week.

Lesson Watch

Being a golf coach can be extremely rewarding. When trying to coach and improve members, wealways look at the scores and look to see animprovement in their games. This was a good weekfor the Colchester Golf Academy. Regular StudentDave Arnoldreceived 40 points, Matt Blackgot 39 points, and Andrew Patrickand Rob Gimesboth got 38 points. Very happy to see thesegreat scores guys.

Swing room

With a poor week for weather, the indoor swingstudio was in full flow this week. I wanted toexplain to you why this machine can tell youthings that you wouldn't ordinarily know.

Ihad Matt Blackin for a lesson, and we discussed his goodshots, and what his poor shots were, and howthey were costing him shots on the round. Theshot causing Matt the most problems was a shotstarting at the target and finishing left of thetarget. If a golfer asked me for advice on whythey were hitting that shot, it would narrowdown to two possible options. One would be swingpath, and the other would be club face.

Without seeing the flight of the shot, it wouldbe impossible to make that assessment. If a shotwas drawing left of target, the presumptionwould be swing path. The ball has the correctshape, but wasn't starting far enough to theright of target. Matt had a consistent swingpath of 7 degrees from in to out. This meansthat with a square clubface the ball would startto the right of target every time.

Thisis a very good number for someone wanting todraw the golf ball. So this narrows the problemdown to one thing. Club Face.

To hit a draw shot, the swing path must be in toout, but the club face must be closed to thepath. This allows spin to be applied, to causethe right to left shape. If the club face is tooclosed, this will cause the ball to not start asfar right as required. Meaning that the ballwill finish left of the intended target. Mattscored 39 points this weekend, so very happy seeit helped.

Simplesteps to hit a draw shot
Club path to the right of target
Club face closed to the path
Release the hands to produce more shape
