Coaching news

Member Ian Devenish was having a lesson at theColchester Academy this week, and I haveextremely high hopes for a constant improvementin his game. Ian is a good natural ball striker, and really has a handicap that doesn't reflectthe ability that he has. Ian is a 15 handicapgolfer, and I am very confident that hishandicap will drop significantly with some workon the new technique.

A player that takes large divots usually has asteep swing path. This will mean that the clubis travelling into the ball from a steep angle, causing a "Fat" or "Thin" shot on a regularbasis. It can also cause a Slice, Hook and lowshot. A path too shallow will also cause thesame problems, so it very important to make surethe angle is correct at impact.

We worked on a practice drill that caused theclub to shallow out through impact. The meantIan hit really well struck high iron shots. Thedivots were much smaller, and the strike reallypicked up. Watch out for Ian's scores soon!

Practice drill for a steep swing path

As you can see, I have set up a ball on top of alarge tee peg for an iron. If a player swingsfrom a steep path, using this high tee, then theball will come off the top of the club, and notthe middle. If you shallow the path, then therewill be consistent solid strike, too shallowthen you will hit the top of the ball.

Please use next time you are on the range andtaking too big a divot! Clickhere to get in touch and book alesson.
