Why get fitted?

This week I decided it was time to change my ownpersonal irons for next season, so I undertook acustom fit session on the GC2 foresight swingmachine. The stats were a clear reason whycustom fitting can benefit every golfer outthere. I decided to try my current set make-upagainst various other brands and heads that Iwould look to go for.

I currently have Titleist MB irons and have hadthose for over a year now. I used a 7 ironsthrough this whole process, and as I will showyou identified a number of very importantthings.

As you can see in the photos above, my club headspeed was fairly consistent through the process, this allows for an accurate assessment to bemade.

My own current irons had the highest club headspeed, but.. had the lowest carry and totaldistance. It carried 167 yards, running out to atotal of 178. I was very pleased with thisfigure. The PING G30 was up next, carrying that178 yards, and finishing at 190. The club headspeed was down, but the distance increased. Thisis because the club and shaft worked better formy type of swing.

The Cobra Fly Z was up next, carrying 178 andfinishing at 189. So very similar performance tothe G30.

I then tried the brand new Titleist 716 AP1irons. These had a carry distance of 180, and atotal distance of 192. I liked the performance, but wasn't keen on the look of the club, anddecided against this choice.

The Srixon 545 irons were next. 181 carry for195 total. They felt very solid, and performedwell against my current set, and thus saw themas a contender.

The Srixon 745 irons were the second last to betried. 175 carry for 187 total distance. Again,I liked the feel, and look of these irons.

The last club I tried was the one thataesthetically I liked the look of the most. Thenew 716 AP2 irons. The total carry distancethough, was only 169 for a total of 179 yards.

Now I had a decision to make. All the clubsperformed better then my current set, sowhatever happened I would be increasing thedistance of my irons.

TheSrixon 545 irons carried 14 yards further thenmy current MB iron, I liked the feel of theCobra Fly Z irons. They felt solid, and alsoincreased my distance by 11 yards.

Whatto do next?

I made a decision to round it down to threepotential irons: Cobra Fly Z, Titleist AP2,Srixon 545. Now to find the perfect shaft toimprove the accuracy! I will update you more onshaft influence next week!

We reallyenjoyed all the Captain Pro matches, and therelationship that we had with them this year. Wewould also like to welcome Vic Pomphrett andSheila Dornan as the new Club Captains atColchester for 2015/16, I think they will begreat assets to the club this year, and we wishthem every success.

Competition news

David Brown played a scorcher at Colchester GolfClub last Monday.

Competing in the Jack Halls Trophy Brown puttogether an electric round to return 43 pointsin this the curtain-raiser to the Vets AGM. Fivebogeys in the first half with birdies on the twopar threes formed the base of his round but hisback nine was a real eye opener. Starting withanother bogey he sandwiched six pars between twono-scores. This gave him 43 points from his 17handicap.

There were 67 players from the Vets Sectionplaying in the competition and Brown's score wascomfortably ahead of his nearest competitor TomDay (11) who returned 39 points. Day sprinkledthree birdies into his round and was two pointsclear of Bob Tebby (17) and Jim Bentley (22)both returning 37 points.  Four players returnedhandicap equalling 36 points and after acountback they were Gordon Rodgers (15), JohnBloomfield (18), Paul Bishop (13) and TrevorVaughan (26).

Maureen Devenish won the Ladies Medal Final Cupby three clear shots. Her round of 77 was enoughto beat both Fiona Prentice (the ladies'captain) playing off 20 and Shelley Persent (17)who both returned scores of 80. It was the backnine which put Devenish out in front. With justsix bogeys and three pars it saw her safely homeand crowned what has been a good golfing yearfor the sixteen handicapper.
