Greetingsfrom Mark Baker & Chris Cutchie | ColchesterGolf Club - PGA Golf Professionals |
This week I continued my custom fit for a newset of irons for next season. After choosing theappropriate club head last week, I went throughthe process of finding the correct shaft. BeforeI could go through the selection process of theshafts, I had to make sure I had the correctlength and lie of the club.
Toget the correct length it is important to makesure of centred strikes. If you find the middleof the club face with a shaft that feelscorrect, then we know that the club length iscorrect. My clubs came out to be 1/2" longerthan standard. The lie of the club is determinedby where the club meets the ground at impact, and as I am 6 foot 3, the angle will tend tocome in slightly flatter than normal. I testedthe lie using the impact board and impact tape, and found that my lie needed to be 2" upright.
At the point of impact, if the head of the ironis too flat (i.e. the toe points down) it candrag on the grass, acts for an instant as apivot, and causes the plane of the face to tiletowards the right - which is where the ball willgo.
If the lie is too upright, the heel of the clubwill dig in and cause pulled shots to the left.
Now I was ready to choose the correct shaft.
As you can see, the carry distance of the had agap of up to 12 yards of distance betweenshafts. This is because either the flex was toosoft, and club head didn't catch up at impact,or it was too stiff, which didn't allow me tosquare the face up and time it perfectly.
The Dynamic Gold X100 was the stiffest shaftthat I tried, and actually outperformed all theother shafts. I was getting more carry, morepeak height, a fairly low spin rate, and thehighest total distance. The Zelos Blue 7 shaftwas the most flexible of the stiff shafts that Itried, and as you can see produced the leastamount of Clubhead speed.
It is very important to not presume that regularor "Flexier" shafts will produce more speed. Itis based on timing of your swing, and when theClubhead meets the ball at impact.
